Seller's Description

Foreword by Derek Thompson

Hardback with dust cover, 160 pages, good condition, colour and black and white photographs. Published by Marlborough 1993.

Mainly Fun and Horses is unique amongst racing books as it does not chronicle the career of a highly successful jockey or trainer, but that of Rod Simpson who failed as jockey and has bumped along at the bottom of his trade as a trainer.
Rod is a flamboyant character, amusing and above all else a fighter and survivor. Although he has never finished near the top of the trainer's list he is widely acclaimed as a great horsemaster, having had a remarkable success in dealing with 'poor' or 'problem' horses.  He has won several big handicaps including the Cesarewitch with Bajan Sunshine in 1983 and the Tote Jackpot Hurdle with Rouyan in 1991.
In November 1992 he moved to Bourne Stables in Lambourn and many people thought the end of his training career was in sight.  However, he sent his first runners out in January 1993 and had already trained seven winners by 9th March including five on the trot with Lyn's Return.
