Seller's Description

The term ‘Gainsborough Hat’ really applies to most wide brimmed, lavishly decorated hats of the 1770’s and 80’s Georgian or Colonial period. Having been quite small and neat, hats grew to quite ridiculous proportions during this time. They were worn over equally large and elaborate wigs and hair styles. Sometimes the enormous hat pins needed to hold them in place were so long that they poked passers-by! Popular colours were black or rich but feminine, trimmed with curled feathers, rosettes and large bows. Some hats were even decorated with whole feathered birds or model ships! The general idea was to be noticed!

This two-tone ‘blackberry’ coloured silk creation is lavishly decorated with a profusion of large fluffy curled feathers, fancy braid, gold ribbon rosettes and faux pearl embellished filigrees. The perfect hat for the miniature lady who wishes to be noticed!

(Sorry, but my little hat stand is not included!)

This hat measures approx three quarters of an inch tall by approx 2 and a quarter inches wide.

This item is an ornament and should not be given to small children to play with.

THIS ITEM WAS ORIGINALLY MADE FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC PURPOSES TO ILLUSTRATE A ‘HOW TO MAKE’ PROJECT IN A POPULAR MINIATURES MAGAZINE. THEREFORE IT IS PRICED BELOW ITS NORMAL RETAIL PRICE, DESPITE BEING IN ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION.
