    Summary:

"The breathtaking story of the Ecuadorian Indian girl who escaped from - and returned to - the world's most murderous tribe."

"Dayuma fled from the Auca forest of terror to escape death at the hands of her father's killer.  Rachel Saint, sister of one of the five missionaries martyred by Dayuma's tribe, went to the forest to bring the Gosep of Peace.  She met Dayuma on the borders of that savage land.  This is their story - a story of incredible cruelty and terror, of heroic courage and conviction, and finally, of a daring return to the world's most murderous tribe."

Content: This is a 1960 [1st edition] of The Dayuma Story - Life Under Auca Spears by Ethel Emily Wallis.

Dayuma fled from the Auca forest of terror to escape death at the hands of her father's killer. Rachel Saint, sister of one of the five missionaries martyred by Dayuma's tribe, went to the forest to bring the Gospel of Peace. She met Dayuma on the borders of that savage land. This is their story - a story of incredible cruelty and conviction, and finally, of a daring return to the world's most murderous tribe.

"The centuries of Christian missions have produced amazing accounts of conversion from dark paganism to the Saviour; but is any story more dramatic than that of mid-twentieth-century Dayuma? This book is a most fitting climax to the sacrifice of the five young missionaries martyred by the Aucas, whose story was told in 'Through Gates of Splendor'.

    Illustrated with photographs.

Additional InformationDayuma (also Dayumae) (born ca. 1930) is a member of the Huaorani tribe and a citizen of Ecuador. She is a central figure in the Operation Auca saga, in that she was the first Huao convert to Christianity, as well as the missionaries' key to unlocking the Huaorani language, a language that had not been previously studied. Later Dayuma also became an influential figure in her tribe.

    Collectable 1st Edition

  • Subtitled ""Life Under Auca Spears"" and sponsored by the Wycliffe Bible Translators, this dedicated and often confusing book tells of the ferocious Auca Indians of Ecuador, who in 1856 murdered five Wycliffe missionaries, and of an Auca girl, Dayuma, who was brought to this country and converted to Christianity by another missionary, Rachel Saint, sister to one of the murdered men. Neglecting the murdered missionaries for Dayuma and her complicated family, the book tells at length of the ferocious Aucas, who until recently killed for the fun of killing, murdering their wives, children, friends and rivals as they did their enemies. When her father was speared by a tribal bully, Dayuma fled for her own life, reaching safety at a Shell oil base, where she was put to work at a nearby hacienda. Here, eight years later, she was found by Rachel Saint, who was determined to bring the Word of God to the Aucas, as yet unvisited by any white person. Through Dayuma Rachel learned the Auca language, in return teaching the girl the rudiments of English and telling her of God; in 1957 she brought Dayuma to this country, appearing with her on Ralph Edwards' This Is Your, Life TV program, making tape recordings with her of Auca speech, introducing her to snow, and fully converting her to Christianity. In 1958-59 Dayuma, with Rachel and other missionaries, went back to the Aucas, a highly dangerous undertaking for the whites; now, thanks to their efforts, the Aucas are discarding killings and nakedness for Christianity, industry and clothes. Pervaded by true religious fervor and unostentatious bravery, this book, which cries for editorial revision, will appeal largely to missionaries, church members, anthropologists and philologists; laymen patient enough to struggle with its opaque style and its emphasis on Salvation may find it rewarding reading.
