Seller's Description
1908 Italian Earthquake Charity Stamps Set of 11
An earthquake occurred on Dec 28, 1908, in Italy, known as the earthquake of Messina and Reggio Calabria. About 100,000 people died. A charity committee was formed in Berlin, Germany. Professor Emil Dopler was the president, and his former student Gustav Tischer created the pictures. They were printed by “Internationale Zentrale für die Offizielli Sammelmarke des Italienischen Hilfskomitees ze Berlin”.
The stamps were sold in a public auction, and the proceeds were donated for reconstruction. They were printed with values in 9 different currencies, one set for each country that supported the committee. This is the complete set that was given to German donors.
Mint condition, no hinge marks.
Each stamp is 1½ inches on each side of the triangle, 1¼ inches high.
The 20 pfenning stamp pictures the Royal Couple of Italy. Each of the 10 pfennig stamps shows a different scene from the devastated area.
The shipping charge includes insurance
