Some Information About davidgwoodhouse

Giving you a little more insight into the seller.

Thank you for looking at my eBid Web pages. Welcome.

A brief introduction

My name is David Woodhouse (strongly believing that visitors should know who they may decide to buy from, I do not use a pseudonym or alias). Although originally from a small North Sea coast village in East Yorkshire, where the Greenwich Meridian first strikes land in the northern hemisphere, I now live in London. Although I love living in the world’s most wonderfully cosmopolitan city, I remain very much at heart a Yorkshireman.

An increasing number of offers

Until late 2012 I had a shop on a collectors’ Web site based in Europe, where I was offering some thousands of items. The proprietor of that site then decided to introduce a new charging regime, so I made the decision to close my shop on that site.

Having signed up to eBid towards the end of 2012, this site is now my exclusive sales portal. I had to start again from the very beginning, and acclimatise myself to the workings of eBid. From January to March 2013 I completed the setting up of my eBid shop.

What kind of sales do I have?

My collecting interests span 50 years. Over that period, I specialised in very fine used postage stamps, covers and postal stationery, principally from central and eastern Europe: in building up this collection quality and condition was always of paramount importance to me.

For a number of years, from the late 1990s onwards, I also dabbled in thematic interests involving city anniversaries, lighthouses, railways and public transport, and for a time also collected postcards, both old and modern.

Having found that other interests (principally an increasing love of travel) have become more important to me, I decided to rationalise and dispose of much of my collection. I am not a professional dealer, but very much an amateur seller. As I still currently work, these sales are very much a passionate hobby.

My sales comprise both mint and used material, although very fine used material predominates. Postage stamps are sold in singles and in sets.

Listing multiple sales of mint material is very straight forward: one simply says how many of an item one has available.

Listing very fine used material, especially multiple copies of single stamps, is a more challenging prospect. I could populate my pages with page after page of pictures of the same generic item, thus giving viewers the opportunity to see each subtle variation of postmark. I do not think, however, that many visitors to my sales pages will relish reviewing multiple images of the same thing. As my fine used material is of comparable quality, I list one sale for used singles and sets of postage stamps, showing one representative image of that particular item, but indicating how many copies/sets are for sale.

A purchaser who wishes to buy one copy/set will be sure that the item/set that they receive will be the one displayed in the image on the sales page. Once that stamp/set is sold, the image shown on the site will be updated with an image of a sale that I still have in stock.

If a potential purchaser wishes to buy more than one copy of a fine used postage stamp, and would like to see images of all copies available via eBid before they buy, or a purchaser would like to choose one copy from a range of possible purchases, I do retain an image library of all the material that I offer for sale. Images can be e-mailed upon request to assist in informing choice, so please do not hesitate to ask.

Shipping charges: postage, handling and packing

In addition to postage my shipping charges include a handling and packing charge. My basic charge for an item will be shown on the sales page for that item. However, postage, processing and packing charges for multiple purchases will be combined and will be based upon the actual cost of despatching a package containing all the items bought.

Purchasers who buy more than one item should ensure that they request an invoice, so that they benefit from the consolidated charge for postage and packing.

As guide, my current shipping charges are:

Ordinary mail (sent at buyer’s risk: not recommended for purchases with a value more than £20): United Kingdom (second class mail) – up to 100 grams is £1.05, and large letters up to 100 grams are £1.45. Europe (airmail) – a standard letter of up to 20 grams is £2.50, and up to 100 grams is £3.55. Outside Europe - up to 20 grams is £2.50 (airmail), up to 100 grams is £4.50 (surface mail).

Recorded signed for (not recommended for purchases with a value more than £50): United Kingdom (second class mail) – standard letters up to 100 grams is £2.55 and large letters up to 100 grams is £3. This service is not available to destinations outside the United Kingdom.

Supplementary services (recommended for purchases with a value more than £50): United Kingdom: up to £500 insured value and weight not exceeding 100 grams is £7.60. To other countries – up to £250 insured value is £10.65 for a letter weighing 100 grams sent to an address within Europe, and the same for an address in Africa and the Americas and Asia and Oceania. Please note that these are representative examples: postage may be less on items weighing less than 100 grams, and will, of course, be more on heavier items.

I am always happy to work with a buyer to find the most cost effective way of despatching purchases, using surface mail and printed papers (book post)/small packet rates where they offer a more economical means of despatch.

Frequency of despatch

I do not place any mailings of purchases in a pillar box, but obtain a certificate of posting for every package that I despatch. This means that I must make a personal visit to the post office and hand my packages to the counter clerk.

I mail out purchases on the first Saturday following the receipt of payment.

Buyers will be informed when their purchase(s) will be despatched, and when the package has been mailed.

Customer service

I hope to offer a standard of personal service that anyone who buys from me will appreciate. Over the four years that I sold items on the Web site that I belonged to previously I accumulated over 2,000 individual feedbacks. Although I am unable to share these with you (I have copies downloaded and stored on the hard drive of my computer), I am delighted to say that all of them were very positive and gave the highest possible satisfaction rating. Buyers were particularly appreciative of the care taken in ensuring that purchases were properly packed for despatch, and by my use, where possible, of pictorial postage stamps.

I hope to maintain a comparable quality of service with eBid. To that end. if you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact me. I want my buyers to be satisfied: if, for any reason, that does not prove to be the case I will reimburse the cost of any item purchased subject to its being returned to me in the very same condition that it was in when it was despatched.

Although, technically, packages sent my ordinary mail are at ‘buyer’s risk,’ all outgoing packages are scanned, and the images retained together with a certificate of posting from Royal Mail. In the unlikely event of a package not arriving at its destination an appropriate claim will be submitted, but buyers should note that prompt notification of loss should be advised because such claims must be made within three months of the date of posting.

Questions and queries

If you have any questions, or queries, please let me know and I shall endeavour to answer within three working days, or within three days of my return when a holiday notice has been placed on my sales pages.

Thank you.

David G. Woodhouse.

4th April 2023.

Returns Accepted

If you change your mind, items purchased may be returned for a full refund, excluding shipping charges, within twenty days of the date of despatch. The purchases must be received in exactly the same condition as they were when despatched (unopened and contained within their original packaging if that is how they were sold). Items above a value of £20 must be returned by registered or insured mail. All returned items are sent at the buyer’s risk.
