SYNOPSIS:  (The Deep Silence) HMS Temeraire; latest of Britain's nuclear submarines.  Her trials just completed, she is ordered hastily to the Far East to strengthen a depleted fleet that has to face a new Chinese threat.  The sudden change brings a challenge to the Commander, David Jermain.  On board personal animosities and petty differences flare up.  Sabotage brings suspicion and fear in its wake.  Ashore is the British Admiral in Singapore.  For him the Temeraire is the last chance to bolster up his prestige.  And the Americans.  To them she is just one more unit to be used in the ultimate confrontation.  Caught in a web of naval and political intrigue, Commander Jermain has to keep his faith in himself and in his ship's potential - even when ordered to take the submarine to the edge of disaster......
