While it's true that the US didn't enter WWII as a combatant until December of 1941, I believe there was quite a bit of hedging on the neutrality by FDR prior to that. Lend-Lease comes to mind right off hand. There were also some American fighter pilots flying with the RAF during the Battle of Britain if I'm not mistaken.
Of course, since I'm not quite old enough to have lived through that war I can only go by what I've seen in documentaries & what my father & other WWII vets have told me.
Hey calm down!
That Cameron idiot does not speak for me and he don't speak for a lot of peeps!
Thing is when your in a fight to the death there is no junior partner! Only allies that are hell bent on victory! You fight and die for each other, that's the whole point of being allies.
Hitler being the nice man (he was'nt) declared war on the US after Pearl Harbour, so the Yanks had no choice but to pick up the Baton!
BUT! Remember this! The war in the Pacific became the junior war! And that was the war the yanks were directly involved in. So don't take the yanks to task, Take Cameron to the stocks an pelt the stupid C++T!
If it hadn't been for the December 7th Japanese attack at Pearl harbor, we (the US) would have probably not gotten involved in WWII. In a way it was a blessing in disguise. We could all be speaking German today!
I gather it was nothing to do with Emmerdale!!
Dang - I wish I had paid attention in history classes
I'm not quite sure if I agree with that assessment. I'm more inclined to think that we would have eventually been forced into it. Pearl Harbor did however provide a rallying cry that should have been heard in both Tokyo & Berlin. It galvanized the American spirit and helped unite us into a single minded purpose.
Of course, if the documentaries are at all accurate, we were stretching the line on neutrality somewhat long before December 7th, 1941. I believe Winston Churchill was quite relieved that Japan attached knowing that it would force us to enter the war on the side of the allies. Until then we had pretty much just been supplying materiel to Britain in their fight against Hitler.
History lessons not a strong point at the PMs public school then???
Nobody can tell what would have happened if Japan had not attacked the American navy, but personally I doubt whether the USA would have entered into WW2 without the Japanese attack. The USA always acts on the basis of its own strategic interest and that is the basis on which it conducts any supposed relationships with other countries. It is a matter of expediency, not friendship. The so called Special Relationship is an illusion. When we had the bombing of the London Underground in 2005, George Bush was at Gleneagles. After the support that the UK gave to the USA when the plane attacks were made on the WTC, the least the man could have done was to come to London to show some kind of solidarity with the British. Instead he flew home. Some friend.
The Battle of Britain took place a good 12 months before the Japanese attack on Pearl and was won mostly by European pilots and in particular the very experienced Polish pilots. Any support given by the USA to Britain prior to entering the war was not free and gratis but had a price – such as financial or the granting of licences to use UK overseas military bases. Fighting a second major European so soon after WW1 had exhausted the UK’s financial resources so the lend lease programme was an area of critical support from the Americans. Whilst the American contribution to the European war was substantial when it came with major loss of American life, it probably ensured that the European war ended sooner than it would otherwise have done. The immense people and natural and manufacturing resources that the Russians had would eventually have led to the Russian invasion of Germany irrespective of what the other Allies were doing.
The difficulty we have in the UK now is that whilst Gordon Brown did lose the last elecdtion, nobody actually won it so although he is in power David Cameron is not truly representative of the British people.
In the Pacific war, the Americans halted the Japanese military advance without which it is likely that Australia would have been invaded.

Westlondoncarpets~ do you run history lessons? Because if you do, I want to join. Your posts are always so interesting.
As for the war~ didn't we sink one of the USA ships, and tell them Hitler did it, so they got angry, and joined in with our lot?
