House plant identification?

To save me a lot of searching can anyone tell me the name of this plant off the top of their head.



It's got away from me a bit as it is now reached the ceiling and travelling across it.

It has started to throw new shoots near the base (probably due to the restriction where it bends 90 degrees at the ceiling).

I would like to cut the stem just above the new shoots but am concerned if that would kill it. The plant has some sentimental value as it was a gift from one of my late sisters. If I know what it is I could seek expert advice from somewhere.

Sorry the image is on its side. Spent 30 minutes trying to get it the right way up using the tablet before I gave up. I could have fixed it in a couple of seconds on my PC. Progress?

I had always thought that it was an Octopus plant, but it doesn't look like the images of those.

It is an Umbrella Tree. My son had one that reached the ceiling and then grew across it for several feet before he chopped it down

Octopus plant and Umbrella tree are the same thing except the ones potted for indoors don't usually flower.

Hmmm... If you look up Octopus Plant and Octopus Tree they are totally different things.

So looks like I got the Octopus bit right but didn't class mine as a tree.

As far as I can remember he did because when they moved house, they took it with them and it was less than half the size of the ceiling creeper
Just 'prune' as with any plant - cut just above a leaf node and it should be okay.

I used to have one of those plants. It needed very little watering and I always cleaned the leaves with beer to make them shine and provide nutrients. I always tried to keep it short (ca. 3ft tall) by cutting the stem close to the leaf nodule . By doing that, it grew more dense and outwards.
