Thread: Free postage not so free hmmmmm!!!

  1. #1

Default Free postage not so free hmmmmm!!!

    Hi All

have just noticed that one of the stores in my category ( Comic Books) has posted a couple of thousand listings almost over night and jumped up the listings just above me. This is cool not to bothered by this as it makes more items available and more competition which is always good.

The only problem I have and this is a big one is that they have listed most of there comics as free postage but it's not. They have lump the cost of the postage in with the sale price. This makes it look like they have over priced there stock eg) comic A has normal selling price of £2.00 but seller with free postage is selling it of £5.00. This will make it look like comic sellers on ebid are trying to over charge?

I can see why people do this on greed bay with them now charging fees on postage costs but why here it's not free and make the seller look like they are charging stupidly high prices for the stock.

It's either because they bring the bay mentality with them, or simply import their listings from the bay and neglect to adapt them for this site.

Likely they will be around soon enough complaining that they are not selling anything here.

Must be imports from EBAY probably since their is no search by low price + postage here and they more than likely CBA to change it

They certainly wont get many views since they will be last on the low-high searches

I believe so. Though I am not as avid a follower of the forums as I used to be and only read threads that grab my interest.

The cost of "free postage" is always built into the pricing. As you noted, for single, low-priced items, it requires raising the price to a level that looks overpriced to some buyers. That is why many large on-line retailers require a basket of items total a minimum amount before "free" domestic shipping kicks in (that way the built-in shipping cost percentage is spread among multiple items, or applies to a higher-priced item where the added cost is less of a factor). Free shipping doesn't work very well for auctions, low-priced items or international sales. Still, some customers have fallen for the "free shipping" hype and will choose an item that includes no added shipping charge over a lower-priced item that requires adding shipping (some don't even compare). Perhaps the new seller is aiming for those customers? If so, then I hope that type of customer becomes his/her buyers here, and those who comparison-shop and take into account the cost of postage should be very attracted to your listings.

I get what you are saying.
I have looked into these listings and they indeed look like they are imported from ebay and there has been no edit to them.
The thing that bothers me is a lot of people find ebid from google as an alternative to ebay and if the site is flooded with listing that are copies of listing on there then this could confuse customer.
Also there is no need here to combined postage with the sale price no extra cost or fees. Look at it this way a seller on here floods the site with listing from ebay with combined postage with sale price all of there listing will appear for a time at the top of the listings as they are new listings showing massively over price items in the category compared to everyone else this will put buyers off all the other sellers. Unless they scroll through searches which may buyers don't do. Its a bit hard to explain but think some thing needs to be said or a how to or tips for importing for ebay needs to be done as I can see this as becoming a problem.

Rocks2dust is quite right. The inclusion of "free" postage makes items appear to be overpriced especially when it is used in connection with lower priced items. There is one particular stamp seller who includes "free" postage in all their listings. When there items appear in the Closing Items and New Items lists they are seen by many potential new buyers who then go away with the impression that all items on eBid are over priced. I just wish the "free"postage was outlawed on eBid. There is no need for it here.
