Actually July 1999 ( ref: https://www.ebayinc.com/our-company/our-history/ )
First completed auction sale was made on feeBay (UK) on 30th July 1999.
If eBid could have launched before feeBay arrived then history could have been different. Instead they launched against an established international business that received masses of free media publicity.
eBid probably did intend to launch before July... but we all know how eBid fail to hit target dates and come in late.

I started on the other side in Nov 2000 and they had the uk site up and running then - and they even used to phone me because I had a charity id.
Joined here in 2003 because monopoly stinks - nothing used to sell - now it does.
Madelaine
4 shops for Cats Protection & Prospect Hospice
My Postcard Shop
BK Stamps for Philatelic listings
& Yarnalong for craft patterns
and
Lotzabitz -anything that doesn't belong in one of the other shops.
I pulled about 30 listings off That Place and joined in here.
Have not had a sale yet but at least in here I don't have any prob navigating around nor has any boss person changed a selling listing.
Possibly ebid is more of a craft/sewing/traditional but not as much as That Place's Etsy site.
I ask that you don't mind this....but I was always curious as a younger lad as well......
Wondering why this appears ebid.s3.amazonaws.com/upload when one uploads photos.
It's the amazon relevance I'm curious about, can't seem to move without those people showing up? Just a friendly question while the rain pours down on Moray County.
Ho-hum......time to do a bit more listing.

eBid uses Amazon's cloud storage for user's listing images. Saves them having to buy more and more hardware to store them themself.
It has allowed eBid to give sellers more and bigger images in listings for free - as they don't have to keep paying out for more storage to maintain them.
They could have picked any Cloud provider. I assume Amazon's must have made sense to them for some reason (possibly economic).
I joined ebay in june 2000 and here in 2001 (under a different username)
