Thread: Local collection: do sellers find this successful on eBid?

  1. #1

Default Local collection: do sellers find this successful on eBid?

I must hang my head in shame, for I list relatively few items here, whereas I usually have close to 200 on the other site.

I guess it's the increasing use of smartphones, or impatience, or perhaps IQ is falling, but I'm finding lately that many buyers over there, when I've listed something for LOCAL COLLECTION ONLY, not only pay with Paypal (grrr) instead of cash but also are expecting me to post the item. Dummies.

So, even though there are far fewer buyers here, I'm thinking of moving my local collection items onto eBid.

What are other sellers' experiences? Do you successfully sell any items with local collection?

I don't offer collection only but I have had a few buyers here ask if they could pick up their item in person. The last one was last September and the buyer came all the way from Staffordshire because he said he had always wanted to visit Bath !
I even once had an eBid buyer from the USA, a few years ago, come to pick up his item as he was coming to England on business !

Thanks, that livened my day! Well, Bath is a lovely place.

I'd only want 'collection only' on really bulky items that would be a pain to send and uneconomic. For example I have a fermenting bin and a couple of 5 gallon winemaking fermenters. A few months ago I sold (for 99p) a heap of rubble! Imagine packing that up to post!

I've delivered locally here and collected just once.. from you, johnwash, before I moved house, but I don't offer it and wouldn't really expect it to work well - Just not enough ebid members.

Whenever someone on another site has paid with PayPal for collection only, I have always (and so far without a problem) refunded the money asked them to pay cash. I always say that if they change their mind after seeing the item it'll be a lot less hassle - they don't pay and I don't give

I think it might depend on where you live.

I have twice bought furniture on the dark side, paid cash and then, for free, given the seller a lecture on why they shouldn't take paypal when the item is either personally delivered or collected.
