Afraid I'm not really up on how the monarchy thing works. When William was born to Charles and Diana he was the heir and when Harry was born, he became the spare. Now that William has children his first born, George, is the heir, while Charlotte, his second born is the spare. Does it matter if the next child is a male or female?

Alas! I must admit to being ignorant of who the current Duke of York is and although I vaguely remember hearing the names of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, I sadly don't exactly know where they fit into the royal family.

Okay! If my research is correct, Andrew, the younger brother of Charles is the current Duke of York and Beatrice and Eugenie are his offspring. Since he has no male offspring the title will cease to exist upon Andrew's death. But it appears the title can be recreated as needed in the future.
