    Default Security Query

Can't find a suitable forum for this so put here as it might get admin input.

When you use https://www.ebid.net/useragent.php to help admin investigate a problem it returns the following information.

    IP : 12.34.567.890
    Country name : United Kingdom
    Country code : GB
    Agent : Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 7.0; SAMSUNG SM-T580 Build/NRD90M) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) SamsungBrowser/6.2 Chrome/56.0.2924.87 Safari/537.36
    Viewport : 980w x 1386h

I was wondering (being a complete numpty about such things - I believe the internet works using magic) if there were any security implications with posting your IP address to a public forum?

In general someone intending you no good is not going to be able to access your local LAN, even if your IP is published.
If you don't use a router but connect to the internet direct, be worried.

I don't know a great deal about it, but from what I have been told/read most ISP addresses are Dynamic - meaning (if I have understood correctly) that they are randomly generated and recycled each time you log on. On two of the forums I use they monitor ISP addresses; on the one there is a logo stating "ISP logged", the other shows the ISP address, but this is only visible to the author of the post and the Mods.

    Thanks, both, for the response.

Within my limited understanding I am allocated a number dynamically (DCHP?) rather than having a static address.

In that event you say it continually changes each time I connect to my ISP? That being the case I can't see that knowing it would be any use to support. I'll likely just delete (as I have been doing) the IP bit if posting the user agent info to forums.

That tallies with my understanding Mel, but as for which ISP's use the dynamic or static options, I do not know how you would find out; or if they would tell.
