    Default Item returned undelivered

I sent a low value item (£2) to USA for which the purchaser paid the postage.

the item has been returned to me undelivered.

I have checked the address on paypal and on ebid and the envelope and they are all the same.

I presume that to resend the item I will need to pay the postage a 2nd time and cant just put the item back into the postal system - anyone know the answer?

before i contact the purchaser I want to know whether I should tell them they will need to pay postage a 2nd time and to confirm the address.

I don't see why I should pay the postage which if I did would mean that after taking account of paypal fees I would have lost money on the transaction.

    thoughts anybody ?

I have stated as part of my Terms & Conditions of sale:

If an item is returned by the carrier as undeliverable to the address supplied by you, or is returned after your failure to collect the item from the carrier's depot or sorting office, then you may either have a refund of the cost of the item (i.e. less the outward shipping costs) or may, within 30 days of the item's return, pay for the item to be sent again; after 30 days the item may no longer be available.
You could offer your buyer the same options if they are contactable.

I assume that the item was a stamp posted as a letter or large letter to the USA.

My first thought is that the Royal Mail has made the mistake of delivering the item to the sender.

    This has happened to me.

If the Royal Mail has returned the item with no reason given I would assume the fore mentioned reason and stick it back into the post.

    Thanks guys for your comments.

the envelope suggests that it was sent to the USA but the address was invalid, according to the sticker on the envelope.

Astral I will try your suggestion.

I just wanted to be sure that I wasn't being unreasonable.

Had this happen to me once, but in my case it never left this country.

I checked with my buyer, who confirmed that the address was correct, and also gave me an alternative zip code just in case.

Checked the original zip code against the usps database, and it was a good zip code.

Sent all the evidence to Royal mail and I was refunded the original postage plus a little extra for the inconvieniance.

My customer was very understanding and was delighted when the item arrived after it was posted for the second time to the original address and zip code.

Could it be possible that the possible that the item was returned owing to the buyer's post office or the buyer's address having been affected by the recent weather issues we've had. There are currently still areas that are underwater. Of course, I'm not sure how the USPS handles those types of things.

I recently sent a shipment from central Florida to Oregon without issue. Mailed Friday and received the following Monday.
