2c Deposit to PayPal account ?

I've changed my password and security questions several times and had several phone conversations with PayPal fraud security people. While it is not clear what the scammers are trying to accomplish, it is somewhat annoying. I actually think that Sid is on the right track.

Unfortunately, it is relatively easy to get one's PayPal email address simply by making a small purchase and then not paying. It is then quite easy to send a small payment to it and see if it is a valid email address attached to a PayPal account and if the account owner is actually monitoring activity on his or her account.

Unfortunately, even changing the email address attached to one's email account only seems to slow them down until they obtain the new one. I must admit that whoever the scammers are they are persistent.

Just logged into my paypal account and ive got an echeque for 3,306.08 (now cancelled) same person who purchased an item from me from ebid for 1p.

Im going to block echeques and yet again change my password and security details.

if ebid did not give your contact details till the item was paid in Full, it would slow this scam down, im assuming the item was not listed at 1p,

No it was not listed at 1p, and the buyers address was absent.

so the scammer could alter the price, this needs to be sorted at the ebid end and/orPP the buyer/scammer should not be able to alter anything, and as i say until paid in Full they should not have any personal details

In my recent case, the item sold wasn't actually paid for in the eBid system, they 'buy' an item, receive ALL of your details from eBid before paying.
They then sent me a 1p payment via Familty and Friends which made no reference to what the payment was for, because they pay almost immediately you think the payment is via eBid.
Check the 1p transaction details, name and email will be different for eBid and PayPal.
PP email support was uselesss, phone support was better, I phoned during normal UK business hours and got through to a foreign sounding lady who clearly did not know what I was talking about, I persisted and used the word fraud a lot, eventually she transferred me to the Irish call centre where the problem was understood and action taken.

Oh how I loved here soft Irish accent!! I could have listened to her talking to me all day

August one cent scammer back today with echeck for $4000. Woman at paypal says just to cancel and not worry about. I was not charged any paypal fees on the various one cent payments either.

I too have been the recipient of a couple of 1c/1p deposits sent as friends and family followed by larger echeques that don't clear or get cancelled for no transaction of other reason known to me, and as a result paypal temporarily closed my account to withdrawals, seemed sensible and deposits, cant understand why they needed to do that.

can someone explain the scam

they've proved my paypal account exists ok but how do they get access any funds in it ? they need to find my password - and like others since this happened I have changed it

not being on twitter or FB - does social media indicate that this is a problem with paypal generally or one targeted at its interaction with ebid ? and/or with other auction/vendor sites

I suspect as someone wrote that a lot more of us have been the subject of this "attack" but due to lethargy haven't reported it.

so how many people have been targeted ?

One reason not to have the same email for both eBid [and other trading sites] & Paypal.

I learned the hard way many years ago on eBay.
