    Hi Marie,

This happened to me end of August - via a "purchase" on eBid - I ignored the 1p paid into my a/c and the idiot subsequently paid in an echeque for over £2000.00. I emailed Paypal and also phoned them at this point and requested the echeque be stopped which they did.
Last night I too had a 1p payment into my a/c (no pretend purchase off eBid this time) - I suspect this is the same person as last month & possibly the same as your scammer. (?money laundering attempts). I have emailed PP again and will phone them after their office opens (9am I think our time). I have also informed eBid Support.

It's all a pain in the proverbial.

I believe someone said the thing to do is refund it? BUT
Be aware I know nothing of this scam - may be best to wait for better advice B4 acting.

Support (eBid) advice was quite strong..... they emphasised no contact whatsoever with the person responsible - I took that to include Refunds and to just deal with Paypal and eBid Support directly with whatever happens.

Update: I just phoned Paypal, they eventually transferred me to a "Specialist" working in fraud area - 1p was refunded by PP and the sender's a/c has been locked down - and I have been thanked profusely.

No charges made for this refund by PP.

seems to work this way buyer has no cards linked to bank account so they make a purchase paypal have to make a request to the buyers bank for the funds, much like a real cheque , this takes time , so seller posts item, buyer cancels transaction, seller left with no goods and payment,

as for depositing a small amount into a sellers account with no purchase not sure how this works they certainly know the email is linked to a paypal account,i can think of a few ways this would be disadvantageous for a seller but i wont elaborate here.

so are these so called buyers fully registered buyers on ebid or guest buyers ? are there taking advantage?

No connection apparent between Sender of the 1p last night and eBid.

I suspect that both persons in my case were one and the same person just using a different name. (my details having been 1st obtained via a supposed purchase off me on eBid).

i agree one and the same person, but and its a big but, are these recent so called buyers coming in as guests! ie they dont have a account just use a email to link to a PP account then buy, would these guests not have there debit card verified ? are registered buyers debit cards used in the reg process? mine certainly had to be as a buyer and seller, maybe a loop hole here needs looking at!

I've had Pay Pal on "speed dial" for the past week - 4 fraudulent transactions posted to my account. I explained the first two and the outcomes in this thread - only the first was directly related to eBid:
Buyer no longer active after paying.

Since those two, I've had two 1 cent transactions posted to my Pay Pal account in the past two days - both by the same person. From the time I have spent this week, researching Pay Pal & fraud transactions in general, I've come to the conclusion that the best thing to do is to call Pay Pal and have them refund or refuse the transactions so that the scammer does not know it is an active account as they would if refunded by the account holder.

What the PP rep told me was that the penny transactions were probably from a "disgruntled buyer" that I'd sold something to on the Bay and he was harassing me. WRONG!! I haven't sold on the bay since 2006, have a new email since I changed internet providers in 2007 and why would someone harass me after waiting 11+ years??? LMBO!!! When he kept on with the "disgruntled buyer" scenario, I told him to drop that idea and call it fraud, as it is! While on the phone you can make sure that the rep not only reverses/refuses the transaction but that they give you credit for the non-refundable .30 transaction fee. - they won't do it unless you ask! And make sure that they report the account as fraud.

The e-check deposit is a direct scam, where as the penny deposits are more like "fishing expeditions" to find out if they can scam a person. And it is so easy to do - they even have YouTube videos and free apps to tell you how - SMH!!

Researching how to protect myself, I discovered that Google and gmail accounts have been hacked too many times to count. The one thing that the 3 transactions, apart from the sale on eBid, had in common were that they all had gmail addresses.

PayPal has been hacked numerous times too - and VERY successfully in some cases: http://www.kolotv.com/content/news/R...444718323.html

The most vulnerable devices to hack are the Android Smartphones, especially if they are used on a public wi-fi source. Do a search for "Android Phone Hacks" and you'll be amazed at how "stupid" these Smartphones really are! You don't even have to own one, but if a friend does and has your e-mail address on their phone, the hackers can get that information. One article said they can hack to the extent of downloading all your pictures (then hold them for "ransom" or will send to your friends, whose e-mail addresses they already have obtained from your contacts list).

Modern technology is awesome - allowing us to do things we never dreamed possible - unfortunately after every new advance there are those that figure out a way to use it to harm others. No matter what kind of protection we put on our devices we are still going to be vulnerable (Experian, anyone??) so we have to stay alert.

    Good morning.

Thanks to all for the responses and the help.

After I noticed the 2c deposit last night, I emailed PayPal and I changed my password. The guy had a gmail account, if I remember correctly.

I just emailed eBid this morning.

It seems that lately there are more *buyers* that don't pass eBid's security checks, than I've ever had since I started selling here. Thank goodness for the eBid security checks and excellent support. I, too, haven't sold a thing on eBay for several years.

It's too bad that there are so many scammers around. Thieves, scammers, treacherous people. Frustrating.
