I signed in to my photobucket account for the first time for yonks - couldn't get a proper html page to load, let alone see any of my images, so the paid for service doesn't look worthwhile, even if I was up for it.

Yep! Seems to be working okay. These would probably not be too good of choices for listing backgrounds though.
I used them for years without a single problem, but unfortunately, unless you pay through the nose the service appears to be useless.

I suppose (like eBay) they are now targeting the business sector who do have the money. They no longer need the small seller or hobbyist that helped build their prominence in the market as there is no money in them. Do they care if the latter group leave and are messed about? No.
The bad publicity might bother them in the short term, but unless it impacts their business in the long term then they can live with it. One payer of $399.99 is worth any number paying nothing.
$399.99 per year is the max they charge for members who have more than 500 images on their files and, of course, I do. They have emailed me twice now suggesting I 'upgrade' for that price or suffer their 'actions'. LOL!
I should have stuck with my own website just to store my images on their. Would have been a heluva lot cheaper.
