while I agree, Tony, this is a much bigger problem. They did a complete redesign but totally failed to run any section past someone who knows that section. Craft is a disaster - collectables has oodles of empty categories and you've seen what they've done to stamps (which wasn't great in the first place)

I think that there is a difference between an expert philatelist, and a seller of stamps.

A philatelist delights in categories and specials

A seller works out how to sell most stamps.

With feedback of selling over 10000 stamps on Ebid I can tell you that broad categories sell most because the buyer looks at most things in the category.

I can also say that whoever put together the categories for GB Commemoratives is not an expert. If you must have commemoratives, and I think it is a mistake, then recognised sub-categories might be be pre-decimal and post-decimal, not decades.

Whoever created this category structure across the whole site was not an expert at any of it that I can see. Crafts is a disaster area and collectables is baroque in its complexity.

I might use slightly different categories from Bill, but I, too, depend on my shop cats to sell my stock rather than ebid's structure.
