A friend of mine has Windows 10, it as just done an update and remove all of her prefered programs and replaced them with microsoft ones, i.e.

Firefox gone replaced with microsoft can reinstall, but all customisations gone
antivirus gone replaced with microsoft security stuff

Could go on, but I wont.

It was very helpfull in putting a text document on the home screen, proudly announcing what it had removed.

So glad I did not go to 10, but stayed on Vista, when the support goes for Vista it is Linux for me.

I didn't have any choice but to go with Win10 as Billy bought the laptop and I didn't like to have go at the time.

My laptop no longer talks to my printer so I have had to pay out £100 for a cloud friendly one since we all have Chromebooks.

I wouldn't recommend Win10 to anyone....my laptop is now stuffed under my armchair unused

However when I shut down the laptop the software was forced on me regardless.

As to 10 & 7, from what I have seen, if you upgraded from 7 then you have 30 days to revert to V7. As far as I know support is still there for 7, it is only XP that has been withdrawn. But mickysoft seem to be on a mission to convert everyone to the (in my opinion) inferior 10.

In my opinion the Windows v. Ubuntu poll is a little pointless. It reminds me of the age old discussions about which is the better football team. Or a bit more relevant the Canon/Nikon argument; each person has their favourite and will not accept that the other system may better it..
Thank you for your comments. I'm really not as concerned about the poll, as about the control issue. Started with W10, noticed some very unusual activity as system was being set up. Machine seemed to have mind of its own. Was actually making (forcing) setting selections, ignoring selected options I had entered, and acting erratic (manic) when I also forced the options again.

I'm currently in the position of having the option of not keeping the system. I do believe that W10 has very futuristic technology. At this point I can not say it is the best, because forcing control on one's users is not best practices in my opinion. However, if this is so, than mandating acceptance of an "upgrade", that appears to be a downgrade is troubling.

Also, if W10 is the standard bearer of other systems, than one might suspect that the other operating systems may soon follow suit, if they are not doing so already. Will also say that W10 went quite erratic prompting me to add a printer, and to use the voice recognition "side kick" Cordoba, or however her name is spelled. I had to force the system to close, as I was getting tired of contending with a computer.

I had actually sat back, hands off the keyboard, and watched it navigate. Sounds sick, but it happened. So my interest in identifying a computer operating system that is capable of meeting my needs, is futuristic, yet not controlling is my goal. So all comments that shed some light on this issue are appreciated.

Well I just got punched off of my computer (not W10), after my last post.

Linux certainly feels like a throwback to a bygone age as far as the user interface and user interaction.

Applications for it are also poor compared to the wealth available for Windows, and there is less support for it by manufacturers. I found many old Windows 95 apps were superior to the latest Linux apps.

Horses for courses though. You can install it in tandem with Windows (or run it from CD) to see it it suits you and remove it if it doesn't.

Sounds as if your trial was a long time ago.

Moreover there are many different Linux desktops, some are very slick, some are very configurable. You can't make a blanket statement "Linux certainly feels like a throwback to a bygone age", that would be like going on your first ever vacation trip and then pontificating "All foreign countries are horrible, I know, I went there!".

There are at least 30,000 free applications for Linux, some are rubbish, some are superb, some are superior to anything you can get on Windows or Mac. Naturally there are specialist areas where suppliers have gone for the biggest market (Windows) and ignored Mac and Linux.

I used to be an enthusiastic Linux evangelist, but I've grown tired of doing that. It works for me (and my wife, both of us have been very happily Windows-free for perhaps 5+ years). If it doesn't work for you, fine. But don't discourage others.

As an example of how you don't need to be a computer geek, I know a lady in her 80s who switched to Ubuntu Linux several years ago, and has run it happily on an old Dell which would have been stupidly slow if left on XP. It's now slow even with Linux, and she's not short of cash, so I've got her a nice i3 desktop and 27" monitor from Novatech, who sell machines without Windows tax. I did offer to switch her to Windows 10, which she's familiar with because of her voluntary work at the local library... "Oh no, I much prefer Ubuntu!", she replied.

Aside from Linux Ubuntu, can you recommend any other Linux versions and free applications. Is Ubuntu the only open source version offered by Linux?

    Gosh, where shall we start!

First, any Linux version is free open source, not just Ubuntu. Mainly that's because of how the licence works. A very few companies have attempted to build non-free desktops on top of Linux, but I believe all have failed or been very unpopular.

Ubuntu Linux, which is built on top of Debian Linux, has been hugely successful because of several aspects. They've put a lot of attention into making it easy to use, they've also created very friendly support forums. Neither of those are true for all Linux versions, some are very much for experienced users, or for servers, or embedded devices, or mainframes, and some support forums can be hard for a beginner to get help -- ask a question in a naive fashion and get mocked. Sad, though as Linux gains popularity and years ago became non just for geeks, that kind of treatment has been more rare. In Ubuntu's forums there is a code of conduct, so if anyone is stupid enough to be unfriendly to a beginner, they will be the one pilloried, not the beginner.

Ubuntu has a predictable release schedule (unlike some versions of Linux, which say "it's ready when it's ready!"). Every 2 years there's a 'long term support' (LTS) release, which is supported with security fixes etc for 5 years (the most recent is version 16.04, released in April 2016). There's also more bleeding edge releases every 6 months, but I'd advise you to steer clear until you're more experienced.

Cheaver mentions Linux Mint, that's another good one for beginners, an offshoot of Ubuntu, and with the same friendly values. I like Mint a lot.

However, the best version for you is the one that some friend or acquaintance is familiar with. You can learn entirely on your own, and with the help of forums and the wealth of material on the web, but it's good to have personal help on hand. Check www.lug.org.uk to find a Linux user group near you. Oh! I've just realised you're not in the UK, ok, then scratch that idea, but I'm sure there are user groups all over the world.

You ask about applications, but that depends on your interests and needs.

And there's no need to make a jump to Linux straight away. Prepare for it. Use open source programs on Windows (or Mac) that are also available on Linux. That way, when you do jump, the transition will seem much easier. After all, few of us are interested in an operating system for its own sake. 99% of the time that we're using the computer, we're using applications, such as web browsers, mail clients, photo organisers...

If you use Windows, stop using IE or Edge, start using Firefox (I prefer it as a web browser and it's one of the first things I install on a Windows PC). I'd recommend Firefox even if you have no intention whatsoever of moving away from Windows.

Use Thunderbird as a mail client, or if you use web mail of course that's equally available to you on any platform.

Try out LibreOffice, it reads and writes MS docs.

If you're a heavyweight Photoshop user, try Gimp (though there are also less advanced image editors).

And so on. There are plenty of sites that recommend alternatives, e.g. www.alternative.to.

I like Ubuntu, it is what I install on old laptops because it runs fast on low spec machines. Don't worry about virus on Ubuntu.

The reason I tolerate Windows 10 is that I use a lot of graphics stuff, Photoshop and Dreamweaver and web editing with sophisticated css support, then I want to connect printers, smartphones and things on a network. I did not find the software I needed on Ubuntu, Gimp is not fully featured enough for me, and I gave up trying to connect network printers etc on a network because I couldn't get enough support from manufacturer or support forum.
