Linux is a name for various operating systems, just as Windows is.
Ubuntu is one of the Linux systems.
User issues depend on user ability and needs.

    Maybe rethink this poll?

If you are just wanting to know the pros & cons of Linux v Windows then make your poll easier/clearer to answer is my suggestion.

My brief dally with Linux left me with the impression that as long as you didn't want to do anything too fancy (just browse the Web and edit a few files) then it was fine. Also, the older your equipment then the better you would likely succeed in getting it going.

Linux certainly feels like a throwback to a bygone age as far as the user interface and user interaction.

Applications for it are also poor compared to the wealth available for Windows, and there is less support for it by manufacturers. I found many old Windows 95 apps were superior to the latest Linux apps.

Horses for courses though. You can install it in tandem with Windows (or run it from CD) to see it it suits you and remove it if it doesn't.

Had not mentioned Linux v Windows specifically, but feel free to share it's pros and cons.

Would it be helpful if it was "Linux Ubuntu"? Also if you wanted to comment on the pros and cons of Ubuntu or any of other Linux systems, feel free to do so.

Thank you Astral for your comments.

What is your opinion of Windows 10? If Ubuntu is installed with Windows 10, would it affect the warranty?

Also does it make sense to reset back to Windows 7; will the support be there?

I do have some concerns about Windows 10; system seems to have a mind of its own. Seems to take too much control. Is there any way around that?

I had tried to be helpful and clarify. Obviously to no avail and I've more to do with my time so I'll leave you to it.

I agree with you about the too much control, with this latest W10 update there was an option to defer the timing. I chose to have it done tomorrow, and got a confirmation that this would be done, this would give me time to back up everything. However when I shut down the laptop the software was forced on me regardless.

As to 10 & 7, from what I have seen, if you upgraded from 7 then you have 30 days to revert to V7. As far as I know support is still there for 7, it is only XP that has been withdrawn. But mickysoft seem to be on a mission to convert everyone to the (in my opinion) inferior 10.

In my opinion the Windows v. Ubuntu poll is a little pointless. It reminds me of the age old discussions about which is the better football team. Or a bit more relevant the Canon/Nikon argument; each person has their favourite and will not accept that the other system may better it..
