Yes "neglect" of a type, is sort of correct.
I can't tell you how many orchids I killed early on - killed with kindness that is! Generally by over watering. Not to mention the lost $$$$'s
The vast majority of orchids - the epiphytes that is (those living on trees/rocks) usually like to get drenched & then dry out between waterings.
Their roots are mostly aerial & do not like to be constantly wet.
Most orchids, with pseudo-bulbs, have the ability to store water & food, which gets them through the dry times.
Orchids in the wild, survive hanging from their host tree & rely solely on moisture in the air, nutrients brought their way by the odd rain, usually high humidity & good air movement.
We - mainly do the opposite - by keeping them too damp with their roots enclosed in a pot, little to no air circulation & very little humidity. Getting the right light conditions is also problematic.
For the most part, orchids are one of the toughest plants there are, & take very little care - once you get their growing conditions right.
It's a balancing act in home culture, & most successful growers are trying to provide the conditions they would get in their natural habitat.
This takes a bit of study on the particular genera you are growing to get it right.

Case in point - you may remember back a bit I added a photo of a new fern I bought, the Pteris brack fern.
Well I thought as this is in the bracken type fern group, that it should remain in boggy wet conditions, which I provided.
Turns out this was wrong & I almost drowned it. I'm happy to report that after realizing my mistake, it is now allowed to completely dry out between drinks & looks like it will recover - should have done my research first!

Just been down the road at my local landscape/nursery to get a few pots, bamboo stakes etc. & couldn't help myself as usual!
Just had to have this Croton codiaeum var pictum (Sp.) great indoor plants for low light situations.
As you'll see, I'm calling it my "Gold Dust" plant

Recently got some new orchids that need potting up, as they were shipped bare root, & a couple need nursing along, as they suffered a bit during the post transit.
I guess 5 days shut up in a closed cardboard box in hot weather isn't appreciated

I love your 'gold dust' plant Old, and hope that you can nurse your new poorly orchids back to good health.
Hoping to take a few pics of the stuff in my garden pretty soon - nothing at their best right now!
How did you get on with the Pteris brack fern - did it recover?

Yes Trish, it's perking right up, much to my relief
I'm potting up the "new" orchids today & they appear to be on the mend even at this early stage.
I'll just have to keep my eye on them & baby them along till they're established - then I can relax a bit.
    Look forward to your pix

Very colourful Madelaine, thanks for the pic.
Everything looks so lush & green there, unlike here, where its a constant battle against very dry conditions.

Here's a little idea I've been working on of late - call me cheap if you like!
But I do like recycling stuff if & where I can. Saves it going into land fill - so here goes!

NOTE: latest fad amongst orchid growers are clear transparent pots! Why, because you can see what the roots are doing & a lot of orchid roots benefit from the extra light. These pots are not cheap!

I'm re-purposing those 2 litre name brand plastic cola bottles & 150gm yoghurt tub containers into plant pots.
I burn holes in appropriate spots with an electric soldering iron (or drill if you like)
Get 2 pots out of the bottle by using a wire hanger for the top half.
See my baby African Violets loving their former yoghurt tubs!
Only caution to note is the fact that ATM I am unsure just how long they will last exposed full time to the sun? Time will tell.
I'm hoping for at least 2 years from the cola bottle, as orchids would normally require re-potting by then in any case.

    Hi all
Well I've been potting a couple of things on i.e. my "Bird's Nest" fern & "Croton" gold dust plant. You may recall them from earlier pix.
Got them into more substantial pots with room to grow on!
In this pic you'll see the Pteris brack fern is in recovery mode, after I almost drowned it - but it is getting better now
The Tree Fern could go up a pot size or two I guess No rush, as they don't like being disturbed & it's only been 12 months since I shifted it out of the ground (it was in a bad place) & into the pot.
    1. Tree Fern
    2. Crow's Nest Fern
    3. Croton (gold dust plant)
    4. Pteris bracken Fern

Apart from that, not a lot happening - except I got a shock yesterday afternoon out in the orchid house!
I noticed this dirty big cockroach sitting on one of my plants happily munching away - so it got the boot treatment fast I can tell you!
Lately, I've noticed nice juicy new growths disappearing overnight & wondered what was causing it - WELL that answered the question!
Now I have to come up with some way of treating the whole orchid house with either baits or traps to get rid of any others that may be present - there couldn't be more than one surely!
