    Default Re: Job

Final Comments and Actions of the LORD Towards Job and His Three Friends (42:7-17) Cont'd

Why did God instruct Job to pray for his three friends?

God's ultimate purpose and plan is to restore mankind and his creation back to himself. In the case of Job's three friends, they were in a position of needing to be brought to a place of right standing with God. They needed someone to stand in the gap for them, and that someone was Job. They had to obey God, humble themselves, and bring their sacrificial offerings to cleanse from sin. This provided them a covering.

God's purpose and plan for his servant Job was to restore him, and heal him, by bringing him to a place of wholeness. God had to heal Job spiritually, mentally, physically, financially, in his family, socially, and in every aspect of his life.

Job's pathway to restoration started as he repented in dust and ashes before the LORD. Job was restored spiritually after he repented and obeyed God. Job's obedience in praying for his three friends, required that he forgive them for all they had done to him.

Jesus taught in the Beatitudes (Sermon on the Mount) that when you forgive others than God will forgive you (see Matthew 6:12,14). Being willing to forgive others and pray for them, has a healing effect on the mind, as well as the body.

God touched the hearts and minds of Job's family, old friends, and old acquaintances. They came to Job to comfort him. They consoled Job's emotions, and blessed him with silver and gold. (42:11) Job was receiving a whole person blessing from God.

Final Comments and Actions of the LORD Towards Job and His Three Friends (42:7-17) Cont'd

Who was actually present during the consolation and comforting of Job?

His brothers, sisters, and everyone who had known him before (42:11). Would everyone have included his wife?

As with the whereabouts of Elihu, the whereabouts of Job's wife, is among the prickly questions about the Book of Job.

Job's wife is not explicitly mentioned in the epilogue. There is no explicit mention of Job divorcing his wife, or of his wife dying.

Following Job's second test by Satan (2:1-8),... "His wife said to him, 'Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die!" (2:9) Job called his wife a foolish woman, but did not sin in the words he spoke, up to this point. (2:10)

There is no scriptural evidence of Job's wife repenting for her brutal comments, and lack of support for Job during his intense suffering. There is no mention of Job praying for her or forgiving his wife. However, this could have occurred during Job's time of consolation or before.

It seems probable that Job's wife was still alive,
and probable that she was among "everyone who had known him before. (42:11)

    So those present during the consolation of Job would probably have included his wife(significant other); his brothers & sisters (immediate family);
near and distant relatives (extended family); Job's three friends; Job's associates; Job's local community; and those of the East. (see Job 1:1-3)

This would have constituted quite a mass of people coming to Job, each bearing gifts of silver and gold. Job's monetary wealth was immeasurable.

Final Comments and Actions of the LORD Towards Job and His Three Friends (42:7-17) Cont'd

What were the manifestations of God bringing Job to a place of wholeness?

Job was restored and increased in every area of his life. Job's relationship with God was restored and his office as a priest was increased. Job went from being a priest to his family, to being a priest to others. Job was instructed by God to pray for his three friends, and to accept their sacrificial offerings. (Spiritual)

Job's hope in the goodness of God was restored. Job's hope in mankind's ability to be kind, generous, and supportive was restored. (Mental)

Job's physical health was restored. Job's strength was increased, enabling him to father ten more children. (Physical)

Job's relationships were restored and/or enhanced. Job's relationship with his wife may have been restored, and their family increased with ten more children. Ten children in heaven and ten children on earth. Some scholars have speculated that Job may have remarried or taken a second wife. This also would increase the size of Job's family.

Job's relationship with his three friends was restored, when he forgave them and prayed for them. His relationships with his extended family, friends, acquaintances, his community, and his region were restored. (Social: family, friends, others)

Job's financial soundness and wealth were restored and increased. His monetary wealth in gold and silver exceeded what he had before. Job's wealth in livestock was at least double what he had before. (Financial)

"The LORD blessed the later part of Job's life more than the first." (42:12,13,14-15)

When was Job restored; was it instantaneously or over time?

"The LORD blessed the later part of Job's life more than the first."(42:12)

First Part of Job's Life (Before He Was Tested By Satan)

    Job had....
Seven sons and three daughters (1:2)
Seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred oxen, five hundred donkeys, and a large number of servants. (1:3)

Later Part of Job's Life (After He Repented and Prayed For His Friends)

    Job had....
Seven sons and three daughters (42:13, 14-15)
Fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, one thousand oxen, and one thousand donkeys.(42:12)

Job's restoration time frame probably spanned the past (retroactive range), present (short range/mid range), and the future (long range).

God is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He is the God of our past, present, and future. Being totally in control of time...God can step back into our past, and restore and heal all of our stony and broken parts.

God had to reach back, touch and heal Job in his battered spirit, soul, emotions, mind, and body. Job had to be brought to a place where he could begin to receive restoration and healing.

Final Comments and Actions of the LORD Towards Job and His Three Friends (42:7-17) Cont'd

The LORD utilized tough love throughout His two discourses, to cause Job to release his past, and to reach for wholeness.

Job's spiritual restoration occurred immediately, after he prayed for his three friends in obedience to God (42:10). (Short Range/Present)

Job was restored to his office as a priest by God, as he prayed for his three friends, and accepted their sacrifices (42:7-9). (Short Range/Present)

Job's family, friends, and associates were moved by God to console and comfort him (42:11). (Short Range/Present)

Job's family, friends, and associates also gave him gold, silver, and probably his vast amounts of livestock (42:11-12). (Short Range/Mid-Range/Long Range)

The scriptures do not clearly indicate the time frame that Job was brought gifts, except for the short range; but Job continued to live for many years. Job 42:16 suggest that Job's increase may have occurred in a short range or mid-range time frame.

However, Job was blessed by God with three daughters and seven sons (42:13-15) He had lost his first ten children in a tragic storm(1:18-19). The rebuilding of Job's family probably took at least ten to twenty years. (Mid-range to Long Range)

Job's increased blessings from God included the addition of seven sons and three daughters (42:13). There were interesting differences in the text's description of Job's second set of children.

Job's seven sons were mentioned, but the emphasis seemed to be on his daughters. In contrast, the emphasis in Job's first set of children was on his son's. Job's sons had their own homes, appeared to be well off, and in a position to invite their sisters to lavish celebrations (Job 1:4). There was no mention of his daughters owning homes.

The three daughters of Job were mentioned by name. Their names were Jemimah (means dove), Keziah (means cinnamon), and Keren-Happuch (means "container of antimony", a highly prized eye-shadow). (NIV Study Bible note 42:14)

The beauty of Job's three daughters exceeded any in the land. Also, Job gave them an inheritance along with their brothers (42:15; see/contrast Numbers 27:1-11).

Job seemed to have shifted in his parenting style. He also seemed to break with tradition in a patriarchal, male dominated society. These changes may have occurred due to the loss of his first ten children, and his experience with suffering.

"After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation." (42:16 NIV)

The LORD is a God of the future. He blessed Job with a sure future. Job's eyes beheld his children, his grandchildren, his great grandchildren, and his great great grandchildren.

God had also lengthened Job's days by 140 years after his restoration. Job was blessed with the life span of a patriarch. (see Genesis 50:23)

    Thumbs up Re: Job

Final Comments and Actions of the LORD Towards Job and His Three Friends (42:7-17) Cont'd

"And so he died, old and full of years." (42:17 NIV) "So Job died, being old and full of days." (KJV)

In scripture, days and years are sometimes used interchangebly. As in..."The length of our days is seventy years..." (Psalm 90:10). Or if speaking of God..."For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by..." (Psalm 90:4).

The phrase "old and full of years" (Job 42:17) echoes a personal promise from God to Abraham. "You, however, will go to your father's in peace and be buried at a good old age." (Genesis 15:15) This promise to Abraham was included with the covenant promise (royal land grant), that God made with the patriarch Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 15:9-21).

The personal promise God made to Abraham was fulfilled in Genesis 25:8..."Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man and full of years."

Job's oldest friend Eliphaz had made an accusation against Job, that deeply wounded him in his time of suffering (Job 5:17-27). However, his statement had prophetic accuracy concerning Job's latter years and the close of his life. (see Job 5:26 and Job 5:17-27*, Job 42:10-17*)

As well, addressing Job's natural earthly future following his restoration, Job speaks of a distant future. He speaks of a distant future, "at the end", after Job's life has concluded; he speaks of a personal Redeemer (God). He speaks of a personal resurrection. (Job 19:25-27) Job had uttered his hope and belief during his time of suffering.

The prophet Daniel spoke of end time events. Daniel was given a personal promise from God, that he would experience a personal resurrection "at the end". (Daniel 12:2,4,13)

Noah, Daniel, and Job were commended for their righteousness by the Sovereign LORD. (Ezek 14:14)
