    Default Linux Advice

I know that there are some Linux posts on another thread, but I thought it might be better to have a thread devoted to linux to make one reference point.

    I don't use Linux yet.

I would like to make a move from Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I feel that there is a bit of overkill with W7, there seems to be too many unwanted features.

What do I need to do/get to use Linux?.
I have a spare hard drive, would I be better to install on that or use the main HDD?

Here is what I use the most..
    Photoshop Elements, .
    Thunderbird for mail.
    Firefox
    Chrome
    Filezilla
    Crimson Editor
    Open Office
    Trainz Simulator 2010 & 2012

    Any advice would be appreciated

    Thanks,

    Graham

    Good idea.

My best advice would be for anyone interested in using any Linux Operating System to get in touch with their local Linux User Group. I am sure they will be very helpful & friendly & welcome your interest and any questions/concerns you might have.
They will show you around some of the OS's (there are lots to choose from).... & probably set you up with a computer with your eventual preferred system on it so that you can have a look around it.

My own local group meets most weeks; is very friendly & eager to share knowledge - the coffee machine never stops & sometimes we have bacon butties/brioche etc for breakfast!
There are no fees/charges at my local Group.

Here is a link to a list of Linux User Groups throughout the country in case anyone wants to find a group close to them:

    I. would strongly suggest for a new user to go for ubuntu.
you can install it as your main operating system on you main harddrive or on a spare harddrive to try it.
almost your programs above will have linux versions or similar programs or will work through wine. which u can install easily witg one click from the ubuntu software centre. most people find after playing about with ubuntu for a day or so that they are very comfortable using it.
you can download it free from ubuntu.com and even explore their site to see how it looks ( i recommend the live tour ).

One concern I have: I wouldn't want anyone to think it is a simple matter to download & install linux just like that. The hard drive needs to be partitioned so that each OS is accommodated in its own space.
If the HD isn't partitioned then any other OS anyone has (eg Windows) would be annihalated.

re Ubuntu - it was my main system for 5 years but the latest upgrade with the fixed side screen icons ruined it for me. The side icons take away vital screen width - I got sick to death of scrolling left to right to read a full page width..... hence Mint is now my preferred choice.

(I know the icons can be hidden, but then when you need them you have to reinstate them, then get rid of them, then reinstate lol! No thanks!)

I guess it depends on if they are using it as their only OS, if they are then its a case of just install, if not it give us the option during install to run side by side.
with regards to the ubuntu interface, all my laptops show full screen no problem, if it doesnt then it could just be a resolution problem on a small screen

If I were to use Linux I would dedicate a drive to the OP system, I plan on doing this in the future.
My preference would also be to have a Linux system on it's own computer, again just my preference.
