It is a shame to see such a icon of paper disappear. I was watching the BBC report that said at in the 1950s it sold 2 million copies a week. Quite a similar story to the US market when Disney comics used to see at similar levels in the 50s.

Having said that I am a little surprised that 8000 copies isn't enough to keep circulation going. There are lots of US comics from companies like Avatar and Zenescope that have titles which survive on smaller monthly sales than that.

    Yeah that surprised me to.
I think the thing with it is that we have send the end of the corner shop as it used to be i remember as a kid in the 80's that you used to only get your comics and newspapers from a paper shop / corner shop and they had them all in there with the Dandy,Beano and the Eagle pride of place on the front of the shelf.
Now when you can find the beano or Dandy it is tucked away at the back behind some god awful rubbish rehashed from the even worst kids TV with a dodgy free gift on it that last about 5 min's.
It is a shame that it has gone but i am still not sure how long it will be gone for? It is being published online but not sure how this will take and from past comic history the Eagle vanished for about 10 years then came back so here hoping we may see a printed version again.

I used to have a comic every day when I went home for lunch. This was the late '60s and the titles I remember the most are Countdown, TV21, Buster, Dandy and the Beezer (which used to annoy me as it was a large comic is the same style as a broadsheet newspaper) I used to have Lion and Tiger comics occasionally too but I really loved the annuals.it felt like reading a real book but with all the fun of comics (my father disapproved as reading comics wasn't 'proper' reading)
I really feel sad that the kids of today don't get the same value out of comics as we did, it seems the 'free' gift is what attracts a customer.

I have to be honest and say that for my money the comics lost their allure when political correctness stuck its big boot in. I picked up a copy of the Beano a couple of weeks ago at the Doctors and the stories were all really bland. Gone are the days of being chased by Dad for a thwacking! or those wonderful punch up illustrations of clouds with feet and hands poking out. Everyone is naughty but nice now....tragic, truly tragic.

yeah sadly the comics British comics of now are not up to much. but saying that there are not that many about. the only British comics now published in print on a regular basis are the Beano which as you pointed out has become tame, 2000AD which is still as good as when it started and was put up for an Eisner award this year and the commando most of the other stuff that fills the racks are just adverts for kids TV programs.
I am not sure why someone has not re-launched the Eagle? because by the end of there print run most of the great comics had be brought out by IPC so they must still own the rights to some of the greats.
It was my birthday last month and my lovely girlfriend brought me some amazing books. Johnny red and Charleys war both these stories appeared in battle picture weekly and it was like being a kid again I couldn't put them down. I found myself lying on the living room floor reading them like I did when I was a kid.lol

If as I was you liked the battle comic here is a link to a web site that has some of the great stories from that comic before the pc brigade changed comics in the UK
