Thread: The End of the Dandy Sad Times

Default The End of the Dandy Sad Times

    http://www.guide2bristol.com/news/23...-for-The-Dandy

DC Thompson have anounced that the last printed Dandy will go on sale this December in favour for an online version.
This is just the latest in a long line of British comic to disapear from our newsagents shelfs titles that i used to buy as a kid are no longer there gone are the Eagle last seen in the mid 1990's althought Virgin tried to revive Dan Dare in the short lived comic book run. also gone are Warlord,Victor and the Battle coimics along with Topper,Buster and Whizzer and chips and Roy of the Rovers.
All that is now left is the Beano,2000AD and the commando on our shelfs.
No one knows how long the Beano will last as it is another from DC Thompson and if they are getting rid of the Dandy for poor sale then this tittle should surelly be the next to go. The commando has been for a long time mainly a hash of reprinted stories from earlier issues with the odd new story put in here and there the only comic on our shelfs which still has some kind of following is 2000AD with a good mix of old and new stories.
It is sad that today comic books for the British Isles can't grab kids imagination and when you look at the comics on the shelfs now all you see is repinted Marvel and DC comics and then tons of these tat comics to tie in with kids tv and the kids only want it for the cheep toy on the front.and tucked away at the back is a couple of copies of the Dandy and the Beno sad times.

Very sad, I agree. Not only for the loss of the comic, but another lack of incentive for kids to actually read.

What with that, and texting, is it little wonder that kids are unable to spell; puctuate; use paragraphs etc.?

I heard somewhere the Dandy sales have dropped to just 8,000 copies a week which the publishers have said is just unsustainable. The Beano still has a weekly circulation of about 30,000 copies a week so can survive for some time longer, but it's a long way from the days when circulation could be counted in hundreds of thousands...

    A sad day...

Yeah it is down to 8'000 a week from over 2Mill copies a week in the 50's. I Can't help but think that it may have something to do with the placement of the product on the shelf it is usually at the back of the bottom shelf behind all the tat so you sometime have to search for it this is defo the case with most whsmiths anyway.
It will be 8'001 this week as i am off after work to grab a copy for me and my little boy before it is gone for good.

That's sad. My grandson has just discovered the Beano & Dandy.
At least he'll still have one to read.

That is sad. Reminds me of a conversation I had with my Dad a while back when he told me he and Mom subscribed to 'Punch' for years til it went out of business. Still trying to dig up his old copies, he swears they're around somewhere and, knowing him, they probably are.

Best wishes for many sales to all,

I grew up with comics like Dandy, Beano, Bunty and Judy - we would get them every single week and I always looked forward to the 'doll' cut outs and clothes on the back of the girl's comics.

Yes, we also had a comic every week: Chicks Own and Tiny Tots (Gosh! I'm showing my age there) Sunny Stories, Eagle and School Friend. They were all part of growing up. When we were older, we had the Annuals.

    Sad.

Wonder how much the circulation is about to increase as everyone realises the potential of collecting the remaining issues for resale in a few years....

well it has goneup this week as i have brought 2 copies by to be honest any back isuess later then 1970's are not worth to much any way but have a feeling the last issue maybe worths something till the bouble burst.
on a side note it show how little people think about it as it was as i said in earlier post right at the back of the shelf behind blood the night gardan comic or some such tat so after pulling my copies i placed the rest at the front of the shelf right in the middle.
