Default Advice about a very old HP laptop, please

I have a very old HP laptop - HP Omnibook 6100. Very old but working fine, except for an intermittant keyboard issue where without my pressing anything a key will either start repeating itself - like !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
or not work. The fault also seems to vary as to which keys it affects. I have been into the inner workings of the keyboard to clean under the keys, but it has made no difference, and I also used a key-remapping program, but as the issue seems to jump keys, it isnt a lot of use. Oh and I did massive virus checks. Nothing.

Is there any way I can fix this issue so that I can use it for typing and taking to Uni again? Or should I sell it for spares?

Also, if I do decide to sell it for spares, what is the best way to wipe all my data off first (for security reasons, and copyright as I have done novel and scriptwriting and postgrad research work on it) I would like to leave the operating system on there though...

any advice on these points would be most welcome.

It must be 10 years old? Goodness! Just copy what you have, reinstall the operating system (to wipe everything), then give it to me so I sell it for you (no, I'm kidding) and buy a new one (from me?). These days laptops turn almost useless after 4-5 years. How did yours last that long? I had an HP desktop I bought in 2001 and I traded it in years ago.

its working fine other than the keyboard issue. To be honest if I fixed that (found some info that I shall try given a free day) I would probably keep it - its not my main computer, but is still fine for internet, typing, etc and of course I can take it out and about when I am off for a day or two.

HP Omnibook 6100 is a great laptop, hope you can repair it.
As good as a new laptop for internet etc running XP or Linux if you have 1gb RAM. Never understand why some people upgrade. Waste of money unless you need the extra spec.

Hello I repair computers and can give you some advice
First you have to be sure it is a keyboard problem so maybe a format first if that's possible (I always say this for other people because some people wrongly diagnose software issues with hardware) also a sign of a bad keyboard is a long continuous bleep.

If you really want to hold on to it you can find used keyboard for that model on another auction site (not sure if allowed to mention or link) for £12.99 free post
There is none on this site at the moment.

One of the main problems can be just a simple "stook" Keyboard, and this could be the case with this being such an old model.

The Keyboard can become old and worn, and as such, pressing buttons etc it's like an old mans bones, slow and takes it's time.

Now when it goes down it won't come straight back up, hence this ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss ssssssssssss

Just take the keys off, give the underneath all a wash and tell me how that goes.
