Put Ubuntu on it. It's free and just as good as Windows, my daughter had the same problem on her laptop (new HDD no OS to install) and has adapted very well to it.

Thanks for that, but I installed Ubuntu on it once I couldnt get XP to work, to make sure the HDD was working OK. That runs fine on it, but I got hold of the machine to sell on and not many people want to buy one with Linux on it. The expense of a new version of XP would kill any profit.

Have you tried selling it with Ubuntu on it? You might be surprised, my next new machine will have Linux on it, simply because they're cheaper (and I prefer it).

Coming with Xandros as standard (another Linux distribution) didn't seem to hurt the popularity of the Asus Eee at all, they flew out of the shops the moment a new consignment was delivered, or the other imitations that have sprung up since it was launched which are also running their own flavours of Linux. I don't think people mind that much what OS a computer has, as long as it works.

E machines are rebadged ACER machines. If you use an ACER OEM version of windows, the installer interrogates the BIOS chip, recognises as OEM and generates its own serial key and installs. This generated key bears no relation to the sticker on the outside of the case.
So a generic version of windows will not install using your sticker code.
A generic version will install IF it comes with its own key.
The above information is also good for DELL, HP/COMPAQ and IBM.

Most e machines come installed with windows home edition OEM version and the coa sticker should have that printed on it, with the machines own Licence Code. If you are trying to install windows xp professional edition or a retail edition of the home edition and try to use the coa sticker on the e machine with the machines own Licence Code it wont work. But if you use the OEM version of the home edition cd, the machines own Licence Code will work fine.

Hi, have just sold an e-machine, so yes the disc is model spacific. Good news tho... if your xp copy is for example xp home the same as the code type on your machine then you can use it. XP can be activated a few times before it becomes Useless. Load your copy on the machine using your coa and finish installing, go to microsoft site and search for changing my xp licence code (or something like that). Eventually you will findm a download which allows you to change the code to the one on the machine. It must be the same version tho ie xp home. I have done this loads of times, and providing the coa on the machine hasn't been used too much, job done,
    Good luck. Tony
ps Just found a emachines reinstall disc for model no. 2210 in my pile of software, let me know if its any use.
