    About Prayer

Who can pray? Anyone, every one, children, teenagers, young adults, middle aged adults, older adults, non-believers, new Christians (babes in Christ, seasoned (mature) Christians, Muslims, Jews, and those of other faiths.

What is prayer? According to Webster's New Twentieth Century Dictionary, Second Edition it is the act or practice of praying. An earnest request entreaty; supplication. A request made to God or to a god.... I believe prayer is talking to God.

    When should we pray? In the morning; at noon day;
at night (Luke 6:12); when we are in trouble(Psalm 91:16; James 5:13); continually (I Thessalonians 5:17). In other words all the time, anytime.

Where should we pray? In a set apart place (Acts 1:14, 4:31); in a solitary place (Mark 1:35); in a house of prayer (Isaiah 56:7; Matthew 21:13); at home, in a place of confinement - like a prison (Acts 16:25); or from the belly of a large fish (Jonah 2:1-2, 10); in the field; on a beach; in your bed; anywhere.

How should we pray? "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites.....for your Father knows what you need before you ask him." (Matthew 6:5-8 NIV) "This, then, is how you should pray: "Our Father in heaven...." (Matthew 6:9-13) NIV/KJV

The positions of prayer include standing (Mark 11:25); sitting (King David sat before the LORD, in a very intimate time of prayer); on your knees (Daniel 6:10; Luke 22:41); while laying on your bed (even those on a bed of affliction can pray); while laying prostate on one's face.

"....but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6 NIV)

    About Prayer (Cont'd)

Whose prayers will be answered? No this is not a trick question. The answers will only be included if found in the Bible. I use the Bible because I'm a Christian. Those of other faiths may find answers to this question that are different to the biblical perspective of prayer. There are also those who do not believe the Bible, who do not believe in God or prayers, or those who just do not know exactly what they believe.

Those who unite in spirit and purpose to petition (ask) God for something, that is in agreement with the plans and purposes of God (see Acts 1:14, 2:1-4):

King Hezekiah had sent word to all of Israel and Judah to come and celebrate the Passover in Jerusalem. Of great significance Israel and Judah had been divided since the days of King Solomon, and had not celebrated Passover together for more than two hundred years. Many of the Northern Kingdom (Israel) were in Assyrian exile. The celebration of Passover was delayed one month later by the king, his officials, and the people (usually held 14th day of 1st month on he sacred calendar). Celebration of the Passover was not possible earlier because not enough priest were consecrated yet. (2 Chronicles 30:1-17 NIV)

Although most of those coming from the Northern Kingdom had not purified themselves.....they ate the Passover, contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them saying, "May the LORD, who is good, pardon everyone who sets his heart on seeking God--the LORD, the God of his fathers--even if he is not clean according to the rules of the sanctuary." And the LORD heard Hezekiah and healed the people". (2 Chronicles 30:18-20 NIV)

"There was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the days of Solomon son of David king of Israel there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem. The priest and the Levites stood to bless the people, and God heard them, for their prayer reached heaven, his holy dwelling place." (2 Chronicles 30:26-27 NIV)

".....but the prayer of the upright pleases him." (Proverbs 15:8 NIV)

"....but he hears the prayer of the righteous." (Proverbs 15:29; James 5:16 NIV)

Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt,..........If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." (NIV) (Matthew 21:21-22)

And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. (James 5:15-16 NIV)

Prayer can and does change things. God answers prayers.........we may not be able or willing to accept. From a biblical perspective, his answers include: yes, no, wait; do not pray.... As God is sovereign, his ways are not our ways, and his thoughts are not our thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8 NIV)

Praying for Las Vegas, who experienced mass shooting, that resulted in the loss of 59 lives, and hundreds of injuries. Joining my prayers with the prayer vigil that was held in Las Vegas City Hall, by the Mayor of Las Vegas and church leaders and congregation members. They called for unity and coming together as a city, and as a Nation, in the face of this tragedy. LORD be with the families and friends of those lost, and give them your peace. Comfort them and bring healing to their brokeness. I ask these things in the Name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Question Re: What A Mighty God we Serve!

    About Prayer (Cont'd)

What are some biblical examples of God's answers to prayer?

    God's "Yes" :

Some believe that God will always respond in the affirmative to a person who is in special relationship with him, i.e., a priest, a prophet, an evangelist, or a fervent believer in God. This is not always true. If they ask in agreement with the plans and purposes of God, there is a great likelihood that God's answer to them will be yes, in the form of an answered prayer. God's dramatic "yes" was given to the prophet Elijah who prayed a simple prayer..."asking the LORD to let it be known today that you are God, and that I am your servant." (I Kings 18:36-37 NIV)

The prophet Elijah had challenged the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah....by going before the people and saying, "How long will you waiver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him." (I Kings 18:15-21)

Elijah directed the people to get two bulls, one for him and one for the prophets of Jezebel. Elijah allowed them to select the bull they wanted, to prepare their sacrifice, place their sacrifice on the wood, but place no fire on it, and to call on the name of their god. Elijah said he would do the same, and call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire--he is God. The prophets of Baal called on the name of Baal from morning till noon, but received no reply. They continued frantically calling on Baal, cutting and slashing themselves until their blood flowed, until the time of the evening sacrifice. They received no reply, no answer from their god. (I Kings 18:22-29)

Then Elijah repaired and built the alter of the LORD. He took ten stones to build the alter, and dug a large trench around the alter. He prepared his sacrifice, placing it on the wood, and placed no fire on it. Then he had the people pour twelve large jars of water on his sacrifice and on the wood. The water saturated the alter, the sacrifice, and even filled the trench. Elijah prayed at the time of the evening sacrifice, asking the LORD to let it be known today that you are God, and that I am your servant. "Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, 'The LORD--he is God! The LORD--he is God!' " (I Kings 18:30-39 NIV)

    God's "No":

God's "no" came to King David, aka a man after God's own heart, when he prayed to God to spare the life of his son by Bathsheba. God had sent the prophet Nathan to rebuke David for taking the wife of Uriah, sleeping with her and fathering a child, having Uriah killed to cover his deeds, then taking Uriah's wife to be his own. King David admitted sinning against God. Nathan stated that the LORD had taken away David's sin; that he would not die. Nathan then said...."But because by doing this you have made the enemies of the LORD show utter contempt, the son born to you will die." (2 Samuel 12:1-14 NIV)

After Nathan went home, David's son became ill. David fasted, prayed, pleading with God for the child, but on the seventh day the child died. (2 Samuel 15:15-19) David responded by taking off his mourning clothes, putting on normal clothes, went to the house of the LORD to worship, then went home to eat. David did these things to show openly that he accepted his discipline from God for sinning. (2 Samuel 12:20-25)

God's "no" also came to King Zedekiah, who had asked the prophet Jeremiah to pray that Nebuchadnezzar's attack would be withdrawn. But the word of the LORD had come to Jeremiah that God himself would fight against Judah, and that their only chance of survival was to surrender to the Babylonians. (Jeremiah 21:1-10)

    God's "Wait":

For scriptures encouraging those who seek God, but do not receive an immediate answer, to wait patiently and trust God to hear their prayer; see the following:
    Post # 1579 (Psalm 130:5-6; Isaiah 40:31)

God's "Do not pray for them...."

Is probably the hardest answer from God to deal with. This answer from God will be addressed in a separate post. The ministries of the prophet Jeremiah and the prophet Ezekiel will be considered in addressing this difficult answer from God.

Default Re: What A Mighty God we Serve!

    About Prayer (Cont'd)

What are some biblical examples of God's answers to prayer? (Continued)

God's "Do not pray for them...."

Would the great, good, awesome God of love and compassion actually say such a thing? Yes he would. Is it just for God to say this under some circumstances? Yes it is.

The ministries of the prophet Jeremiah and the prophet Ezekiel will be considered in addressing this difficult answer from God. Their prophetic ministries overlapped, Ezekiel was commissioned by God to prophesy to Judah (Israel, their covenant name) in Babylonian exile. Ezekiel was sitting among the exiles when he received his inauguration and commission (call) to be a prophet to Israel. (Ezekiel 1---3:23)

Early in the ministry of Ezekiel, God placed severe restraints on his movements and his ability to speak. Ezekiel said...."Then the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet. He spoke to me and said: 'Go, shut yourself inside your house. And you, son of man, they will tie with ropes; you will be bound so that you can not go out among the people. I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so that you will be silent and unable to rebuke them, though they are a rebellious house. But when I speak to you, I will open your mouth and you shall say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says.......' " (Ezekiel 3:24-27) Ezekiel was severely confined until the fall of Jerusalem occurred, and was allowed only to speak the direct word of God to the people, as they were a rebellious people. Ezekiel was freed from his ministry restraints, only after the fall of Jerusalem. (Ezekiel 24:25-27; 33:21-22) Afterwards, Ezekiel's messages to Israel were messages of hope and restoration.

Jeremiah was called to minister as a prophet to the nations, and specifically to minister to Judah (Israel, their covenant name), who were still in Jerusalem after Israel went into Assyrian exile. (Jeremiah 1:4-19) Jeremiah was sent to Judah to rebuke them for forsaking God in spiritual adultery (apostasy), by serving false idols (gods). Destruction of Jerusalem to come from the North (Babylon), for her unfaithfulness to God. (Jeremiah 2---7:15) "So do not pray for this people nor offer any plead with me, for I will not listen to you." (Jeremiah 7:16)

Jeremiah was sent to the people of Judah to review the terms of the covenant that was made with their forefathers. "Both the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken the covenant I made with their forefathers. Therefore, this is what the LORD says: 'I will bring on them a disaster they cannot escape. Although they cry out to me, I will not listen to them.....' " (Jeremiah 11:1-11) ..."Do not pray for these people nor offer any plea or petition for them, because I will not listen when they call to me in the time of their distress." (Jeremiah 11:14)

The LORD had told Jeremiah not to pray for the people..........Jeremiah prayed and interceded for the people because of the drought. (Jeremiah 14:7-9) Then the LORD made a comment about the people, and told Jeremiah "Do not to pray for the well-being of this people. ....Although they fast, I will not listen to their cry; though they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, i will not accept them. Instead I will destroy them with the sword, famine and plague." (Jeremiah 14:10-12)

Jeremiah reminds God of what the other prophets are saying...no sword, no famine, only lasting peace in this place. The LORD responds that they are lying, that they were not sent by him, and that they will perish by sword and famine. (Jeremiah 14:13-18) Jeremiah responds by praying and interceding for the people again. (Jeremiah 14:19-22)

"Then the LORD said to me: Even if Moses and Samuel were to stand before me, my heart would not go out to this people. Send them away from my presence! Let them go!....." (Jeremiah 15:1-2) Jeremiah speaks a personal petition to the LORD, but also accuses God of not being dependable. (Jeremiah 15:15-18) The LORD commands Jeremiah to repent. The LORD is also gentle with Jeremiah, encouraging him and restoring his call. (Jeremiah 15:19-21)

    What an awesome God!

I'll say a hearty amen to that!

The Apostle Paul, addressing the Ephesians, a mature and faithful group of believers, with instructions for putting on the whole armor of God. Praying in the Spirit is a part of that armor. (see Ephesians 6:10-18) And the Spirit of God would lead and guide the believer in how to pray and what to pray for. Paul went on to say........."With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints." (Ephesians 6:18 NIV) "Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains....." (Ephesians 6:19-20 NIV) The Spirit lead prayer will always reflect the will and purposes of God.

Have continued praying for the many people in California, Texas, Florida, Mexico, Puerto Rico, The Caribbeans, and all impacted areas, that were devastated by hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes, out of control fires, and other residual damage. Their road to recovery will be long term in many cases. Have been praying that they do not feel forgotten in their day to day struggles.

Have been praying also for our front line rescue and recovery persons; that they would remain strong and encouraged as they come along side of the many impacted people to help.

Have been encouraged by the many acts of kindness, non-governmental giving, and governmental giving that is going on, in behalf of the devastated areas. Praying that these efforts will continue for the long haul, throughout the road of recovery.

I have had three clear answers to prayer recently.
The Flame team's latest mission was to Jordan. One group allocated them 10 minutes to pray with people. This was obviously not enough, so I prayed for more. The meeting was extended by 2 hours!
A missionary friend was on the point of finding himself sleeping rough and money came in
I have been praying for a charity which needs a pop-up shop in London and now they have one in a really good position in Soho (which is not the sordid area it used to be.. the shops are getting smarter and smarter). This charity needs extra funds as they have been asked to open a second school in Afghanistan - they have one already.
