Like the sound of that one, Annie. Haven't read any of hers. Will look out for it.

I'm reading THE RUSSIAN CONCUBINE by Kate Furnivall for the second time.

    Summary
A sweeping novel set in war-torn 1928 China, with a star-crossed love story at its center. In a city full of thieves and Communists, danger and death, spirited young Lydia Ivanova has lived a hard life. Always looking over her shoulder, the sixteen-year-old must steal to feed herself and her mother, Valentina, who numbered among the Russian elite until Bolsheviks murdered most of them, including her husband. As exiles, Lydia and Valentina have learned to survive in a foreign land.
Often, Lydia steals away to meet with the handsome young freedom fighter Chang An Lo. But they face danger: Chiang Kai Shek's troops are headed toward Junchow to kill Reds like Chang, who has in his possession the jewels of a tsarina, meant as a gift for the despot's wife.
The young pair's all-consuming love can only bring shame and peril upon them, from both sides. Those in power will do anything to quell it. But Lydia and Chang are powerless to end it. (From the publisher.)

THE CONCUBINE'S SECRET is just as gripping.

I've just finished Dirty Little Secret, a spy novel by Jon Stock that I was lucky enough to be sent pre-release by the author. A ripping yarn!

I thought everybody else on the planet was busy reading 50 Shades of Grey. We can't stock it fast enough in the book shop. Bizarre.

Isn't it extraordinary? Have you actually looked at the book? I read the back synopsis and knew it wouldn't be my cup of tea, but opened at a random page to check the text - the quality of the prose was shockingly bad. Like a cross between Mills and Boon and the Da Vinci Code in style.

The hype alone was enough to put me off; never been one to follow the herd

Sounds like a triumph of image over substance. Would Lady Chatterley's Lover have received so much publicity if it hadn't been banned? I must confess, though, I haven't read it so maybe I'm not qualified to give an opinion.

I was in my mid-teens when Lady Chats was published. I remember wrapping the book in brown paper with the title 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' written on it

No-one would blink an eye-lid at it now.

Think I prefer the Gransnet version:
