Thread: Over half a million auctions at last!!!!

    @Crafters_Corner.

    I agree with you not trying to dig them out but chopping the leaves off as soon as they appear. With established clumps I found it helps to use a spade quite deeply and closely to chop the bulbs into pieces. Doing that two / three times plus pulling up any leaves that re-grow works without spreading them around.

    @Police-Quilts.

    They're an unusual shade of blue and look gorgeous, they'll look even better when they spread a bit and fill in the gaps. Are they really Blue-bells? With the flowers in a bunch at the top they remind me of what I'd call "Spring Snowflakes"? In the south of England they're quite common in gardens, but I've only ever seen them with white flowers.

    @ Falon Towers.

    You've certainly got the right plant then, they'll spread all over the place and keep the weeds down !!

    I don't mind the clumps which can be contained and give a lovely splash of colour with the primroses - which are also taking over the garden but easily managed. But keeping on top of the bluebells is essential. We have several white ones appearing - strange, as if they are cross pollinating, they would surely be pink or pale mauve.

    I didn't plan to buy the pink flowered plants when I went on-line that day. I just searched for 'ground cover' and they came up high up in the search

    They were bought as plug plants

    I think they cross pollenate with Hyacinths ? One garden I worked in had white and mauve Blue-Bells and loads of Hyacinths naturalised in a bed nearby. The owners children and grand-children sent them at Christmas / birthday's / Mother's Day in all colours, the blues and whites seemed strongest.

    They're actually bulbs and if you need to get them to spread quicker than they do naturally, you can dig up a clump and carefully separate each bulb to get dozens more. Or if you have big clumps, use two garden forks back to back to lever them apart and re-plant the smaller clumps.

    Those pink flowers, we (USA) refers to them as shamrock plants and that they are sold as house plants.
    I know they have tons of bulbs. I remember transplanting some into a bigger pot for a neighbor.

    I have a pair of killdeer birds that is nesting. I have never seen their nest before. They just put them on the ground.
    When you approach an area that they are nesting, they will walk away from their nest and pretend to be injured to make their predator following them.
    I did manage to get a picture of a killdeer and the 3 eggs.

    On the right is the killdeer bird and straight across to the left you can see the eggs. They are a speckled/blotched green egg.
