  • Beanie Babies Future

Past, Present, and Future of Beanie Babies

In 1986, shrewd innovative businessman Ty Warner was fired from his previous job working for a stuffed toy maker because he was creating his own line on the side. Eventually that would become known as the earliest versions of Beanie Babies, one of the biggest ‘crazes’ in toys, especially stuffed animals, in modern history.

The Official Beginning of the Company

Ty Inc. was officially launched in 1993 and through a serious of brilliant marketing strategies, Ty Warner began to build his new line of ‘posable’ stuffed animals into a ‘must have’ product.

A couple of women who lived close to where he started this business outside of Chicago, Illinois became the first official ‘collectors’ of Beanie Babies and began to notice a trend. There were some Beanie Babies that were being discontinued or new ones being released at various times.

The early history of Beanie Babies began to sow an almost insatiable need by some to get their hands on these ‘special’ releases or Beanie Babies that were being discontinued. Beanies that were being sold in retail stores for $5 were suddenly being bought for $10, $50, and in some cases hundreds of dollars.

It was a phenomenon few could have predicted, and just as quickly as it arrived, things dried up. Many people incorrectly assume that Beanie Babies were around for decades when in fact it was only a few years.

The Crash of the Beanie Baby Craze

By 1999, Ty had overplayed his hand and the market completely dropped out. People who had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in the hope of capitalizing on the frenzy were suddenly left with tens of thousands of Beanie Babies that were now being sold 3 for $10.

Throughout much of the 2000s, most thrift and other retail stores weren’t even accepting Beanie Babies for resale. There were no buyers. While a few rare individuals did make a fortune buying and selling Beanie Babies, by the time the crash of this market occurred, the majority of people who invested in them had discovered their investment was worthless.
But that’s not the end of the story.

    The Future of Beanie Babies

The value of products is determined by supply and demand, and throughout much of the 2000s, people were selling off or even throwing away boxes upon boxes of Beanie Babies. They didn’t see any real value in keeping them around.

That’s why the future of these stuffed animals will likely change. And soon.

As Beanie Babies become scarcer thanks to disgust among those who simply want to get rid of these posable stuffed toy animals that take up space, there will be fewer and fewer available. This generally drives up the price.

It may take a bit more time, but eventually their value will likely rise once again. So hold onto your Beanie Babies, or add to your collection. You should be able to get some great deals right now. Checkout our Beanie Babies Category
