Maybe the notice would be better displayed as an alert box with buttons to either continue on to view the listing or go back?

I think that would be a great idea. Due to family circumstances I recently had to put a holiday notice on my listings (my first ever) and did this in a hurry. It's been deleted now but at the time I wasn't sure if I'd set it up correctly as I couldn't find it on a couple of listings I checked. I might have been looking in the wrong place but if it was there it certainly didn't jump out at me.

If you put a holiday notice on your items this appears under the auction price and also under the buy now price if you have included one. Furthermore, potential buyers cannot place a bid or buy now if there is a holiday notice in place
Are you referring to a notice which informs buyers that you will be away without activating the holiday notice? In this case, the notice could be more prominently displayed (perhaps using colour) but activating a holiday notice solves the problem.
I would like to make the point that I would like to be able to put a holiday notice on an auction without out also operating on buy now. My reasoning is that an auction could (and probably would) end during a holiday whereas it would be possible to complete a buy now transaction before going on holiday
STILL a very relevant issue as I've just had an American buyer purchase 6 BIN items and paid for all individually as she didn't see the notice about waiting for my invoice for multiple purchases - grrrrr [the notice being tooo pale and easily missed]
Please can we have the HTML/colour option back?

I find that Holiday notices work when they are set to cannot buy.
I also put notices on my listings to say, Open, but the next posting date is .... when I am away for a few days. That works most of the time, but it may be because many of my buyers are not in a hurry.
If we had feedback on how many people scroll down to see the whole listing, I think it would be dismaying to see that all that lovely information we carefully craft goes unread!

It would be good if they were on the shop as well. It must be annoying to have looked at a shop and then clicked the item only to discover that you are wasting your time.
