Another name which seems to have disappeared is Archibald. I was at school with a lad whose middle name was the diminutive, "Archie" which seemed very strange.
Since then, we seem to be besieged by diminutives, largely created by people who do not understand names...Sams who are not Samuels or Samanthas...I even taught a "Rony" (sic).
I have a niece, born in Essex, whose given name is Ceri, supposedly the Welsh version of Kerry; it is not. in Welsh Ceri is a boy's name, and the girl's Ceri is a diminutive of Cerys or Ceridwen (all the C's here are sounded as "K"). And why is it that people, even those of Irish descent, persist in naming their daughters Caitlin and pronouncing it Kate-lin....when it is Cat(h)leen!!!
