Hi and thanks, much appreciated.
Best wishes for many sales to all,
Think I'm having a problem with Java on my new Acer PC running Windows 8.1 as some web pages, including eBid's are not displaying correctly + I'm unable to upload images to forum posts. I kept getting pop-ups about Java changing something on my computer's hard drive and I've obviously clicked 'NO' at some time.
Have double checked this with my old Dell PC running XP and everything's fine on there.
So how do I fix this?
Thanks Sherlock - will give it a go
Even better, uninstall it, and don't take the second step!
Seriously, most people have no reason to have Java installed, and if you ever do need it a web site will tell you and you can decide then whether to install it or take that website off your "must visit" list.
Java has one of the worst security records. And although it has an auto-update mechanism, this shows up with a little box popping up unexpectedly saying something like "jucheck.exe: update available, click here to install". Most people don't know what the heck is going on when that happens. So to be cautious they close it and ignore it. Thus they don't have the latest Java security update and are vulnerable. Disaster.

As far as I know, eBid doesn't use Java on its website. BICBW and would be happy to be corrected.
Much more likely it's due to differences in the browsers you're using. What browser are you using on 8.1 and on XP? What version?
If you haven't tried it, might be worth trying Firefox. It's a nice browser anyhow, so your effort wouldn't be wasted.
PS: If you can't fix it after extended efforts, best solution is you keep on using the Dell XP, and send me the Acer, I'll make good use of it!
PPS: Though of course Win 8.1 wouldn't stay on it with me for more than 5 minutes -- I'd be replacing it with Ubuntu or Linux Mint!

Thanks for all advice - problem seems to have sorted itself out.
My new PC came with java pre-installed. I'm using latest version of Firefox with Acer/8.1 and an older version on Bell/XP.
Still thinking about trying Ubuntu or Mint - time keeps running away with me at the moment!
If it's like many other new Windows PCs, it also came with a metric ton of rubbish as well! Especially the big name vendors are guilty of this, many suggest that they get kickbacks for including trialware. For example, many come with bloated Norton trial, relying on people taking the easy option and paying when the trial ends, instead of uninstalling and replacing it with (free) Microsoft Security Essentials.
You could go into the Control Panel, Programs, and uninstall Java. If you later find you need it, you can reinstall it, it's free. But if you don't need it, there's no point in having the security risk.
Do try Ubuntu or Mint. Life will become so peachy you'll have more time available, you'll find yourself sitting on a beach sipping cocktaiils! Or maybe that's just my desktop wallpaper and strong imagination!
