I would just like to say that the dog in question had only been with the family a short while and came from a rescue centre. The centre had only just started taking in stray and dumped dogs from the council. It was apparently known that this dog had been abused previously. It should NEVER have been placed in that home. Put it down to inexperience of the rescue centre, which I am disgusted with and hope they now close down.

No child should ever be allowed to sit on a dog.
You never know if the dog has an injury you are not aware of.
And their backs are NOT make for sitting on.
This is a very dominate position in the dogs eyes and can be seen as a threat.
To a child it is just fun, to the dog it can be seen as a threat,
to an adult it should be stopped.

Could not agree more. At the end of the day, it was adults who are responsible for what happened.
And that seems to be over looked.
No animal attacks without a reason.
Just because humans do not know the reason, doesn't mean there wasn't one.

I didn't know how to comment on Trish's pic without causing her annoyance. Your post says it all.

I must admit when I saw Trish's pic I could see all the elements and risk of an attack were there.

99.9% of the time nothing would happen, but on the rarest of occasions tragedy will strike in a heartbeat.

Ah glad I am not the only one.
Yes, someone could let off a firework at the door, causing the dog to react differently to normal.
Or even a high pitched noise, that the dog could hear, but not humans.
Again they are in a corner ~ which if the dog turns round means he is between the kid and adult, and makes access to the child difficult for the adult, if something does happen.

I trust the dogs I know ~ because I know the dogs I trust.

Can't say the same for humans thro.

Sorry Trish, I do not mean to upset you in any way shape or form.
I too had GSD's for 30 years and totally trusted them.
I knew what they would and would not put up with.
And I'm still learning about dogs, they are the only species that even attempt to understand us.
And most of us, don't even attempt to try and give them the same consideration.

Which is why I prefer dogs.
