Default Shop "mislaid" counter top collection tin? (what to do?)

Today I went to collect our theatre groups counter-top collection tins from local shops, and replace them (I do this approx every 6 months). Most places were fine, but I went into one shop and they told me that they had mislaid the tin. It hadnt been stolen, they had agreed to put it out on the counter, but moved it somewhere out back while cleaning, and no longer could find it. The manageress had another big search while I was there.

I wouldnt be so worried, but even the collection tins cost a fair bit of money in themselves.

Advice? (other than not bothering with that shop again?)

Offer to help them look, if they'll let you in the back premises. I can believe something could get lost - you'll be more attuned to how it looks and more likely to spot it. Also shop staff tend to be fully occupied and might not be able to spare enough time to do a proper hunt.

its always worth asking. In my days of working in shops it was always the case that no non-staff were allowed "behind the scenes" for any reason whatsoever, so I didnt even think to ask.

Since it's the only suggestion you've got, you might as well consider it.
