Only if you're running on Windows, other OS's tend to let you open a document or file many times, the last to save it will overwrite any previous saves. Personally I can't stand the way Windows locks files in this way (it could just be MS software that does this, as notepad++ allows files to be changed by other means / programs).
As for MS Office, it's buggy and not worth the money even if it was half the price. I can't count the number of times Outlook has crashed for no reason, the security features are a joke and cause more problems than it's worth, and Word frequently throws up meaningless error messages also for no reason at all. The whole Office suite is supposed to be integrated, so why then does Outlook refer to Word as an external program and give me the impression that it thinks it could be a potential security risk? Junk!
OpenOffice is free, there's a Mac OS project of it called NeoOffice which is excellent and integrates very well with OS X. You get a lot more than you would otherwise get if you paid for MS Office or any other office suite for that matter!
I really wish we used OpenOffice at work, then half of my daily headaches would just disappear.
