In some cases the email address on mouseover will actually show a viable address. Mimicking a verified address is not difficult. The giveaway is usuallly the link in the email which on mouseover will be not quite right.
I've dealt with various anti-fraud depts on this kind of stuff before and paypal are generally pretty good, but in essence as you report and halt one offender another springs up. For every case that you spot and identify as a fraud you can almost instinctively know that some people will have been sucked in by panic or paranoia. The big companies do tend to send security mails and have notices on their site warning of things to look out for, but there is not a lot else they can do.

These scam-spoofs have been going on since 2001 and multi hundreds have gone bye-bye.
I used to send these to spoof and they always replied. Just get so many of them now that I automatically delete along with the 'You have a tax refund' and Security alerts from must about every known bank in the UK!
On the subject of Nigeria, can't imagine why that was pulled. As far as I can remember, eBay had that pinned to the top of their forum. (Might be memory playing tricks).

The thread yesterday was pointing out that the crooks are Learning. For the emails I got had perfect spelling And looked so genuine especially as three came through with different subject lines all connected to the same thing. The simple truth is these emails MUST catch some people out or they (the crooks) would not still send them!
