recorder with out hole in back ? whats it called

Hi all
I have an old instrument for sale but not sure what it is called.
It looks like a recorder but doesn't have the hole at the back for the thumb.

Any ideas what its called ? or is it a recorder?
Im probably being real thick and its something really simple

Hi,

I think it sounds like it could be a very early recorder. I don't think they always had a thumbhole necessarily.

Have a look through somewhere like the following and see if you get any clues or pictures to help.

can't put a picture up at the moment as my camera batteries are charging lol , i will post one tomorrow though .

also there are no parts on it that come apart , like on recorders , where the top and bottom you can take off .

Does that still make it a recorder? lol .
