How awful! Really can't make any suggestions as I don't understand the situation in the US.

A thought - might a bit in the local paper drum up some support?

    How about a Facebook Appeal?

Set up a "Go Fund Me" page and keep bumping it to the top of your timeline on Facebook. Put donation jars in the local shops with info on where the money is going - people often drop their "change" in them here, but it adds up. Collect the money weekly to ensure "unscrupulous employees" don't help themselves. Organize a potluck fundraising dinner (everybody brings a dish AND gets charged for a meal) with an auction of donated goods. Get local businesses to advertise & donate for the auction or with food for the meal. Many people here can't afford insurance and when there is a fire or a death, the community gathers together to help and everybody enjoys the socializing.

I looked at the Sagkeeng First Nation website, read a fair bit of what was on offer and by following the links it seemed to me that the situation is the responsibility of the Manitoba government; of course I may be misunderstanding some key point here, and that would not surprise me, but I was wondering if the EIA route had been explored fully?I would have thought that a country as socially advanced as Canada would not have set up reservations without any backup to services. It might be worthwhile putting out feelers in this area if this has not already been done.

It may be worthwhile outlining the case to the relevant government department in any case - embarrassing questions to the band may well be enough...

How crass of me! I didn't read past "pinefalls" - but I don't understand the situation in Canada either - except that I feel sure the local paper would be interested if only in the corruption side of it. (have read Canadian local papers quite recently)

This is an informative article which I found using the search terms "Sagkeeng First Nations"

"The band tried installing smoke alarms in some older homes a while ago, McDougall said, but people soon were asking for them to be removed, because their cooking fumes and tobacco were regularly setting them off."

Typical of someone with a UKIP avatar to pick out a small quote from a long and detailed report to blame the victims.
