    REVELATION 17

Revelation 17:1-2 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will show unto thee the judgement of the great prostitute that sitteth upon many waters:

    (2) With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. [KJV/NLT]

One of the seven angels who had poured out his vial (bowl) of judgement (plagues) on the inhabitants of earth came over to talk with John. The angel was not identified as to which one of the seven angels spoke to John. The angel requested John to come with him; that he was going to show John the coming judgement of the great prostitute, who sits on many waters.

The time frame for these events will be during the second half of the Tribulation Period. The judgement to come, is spoken of in future tense by the angel. The prostitute is described as sitting upon many waters. The angel explained to John later, that "the waters where the prostitute is sitting represent masses of people of every nation and language." [Rev. 17:15 NLT]

The angel explained to John that the prostitute (aka the woman, the harlot) has committed fornication with the kings (rulers) of the earth. In Revelation and throughout the scriptures fornication is often referring to spiritual immorality; unfaithfulness to the LORD; serving false gods and idols.

The apparrel of the woman reflects royalty; she is concubine of kings. The prostitute, the woman of Revelation 17, represents the evil religious system that will emerge during the second half of the Tribulation Period. This evil religious system will join with the kingdom of Anti-christ, to deceive the inhabitants of earth. The people of this world will be intoxicated and blinded by the deception of this end time religious system.

The great prostitute (the woman) will be described by the angel in detail throughout chapter 17; and her mystery will be interpreted by the angel to John.

    REVELATION 17
    (Continued)

Revelation 17:3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. [KJV]

John is describing being carried away by the angel into the wilderness. This is a spiritual wilderness; a spiritually desolate and isolated place. Here, John sees a woman;, this woman is the great prostitute described in Rev. 17:1-2. Various questions arise when attempting to identify the woman (the harlot/prostitute).

Who is this woman? What does this woman represent?
    - Woman is used symbolically throughout the Scriptures to represent spiritual purity or spiritual defilement.
    - Harlot/Prostitute is used symbolically throughout the Scriptures to represent spiritual adultery or idol worship.

This woman is depicted sitting upon a scarlet colored (red) beast. The woman is distinct from the beast, a separate agent. The woman is also acting in support of the beast, and in agreement with the beast. The woman, representing an evil religious system is coming along for the ride; enjoying the power and influence of the beast. The beast is benefiting from the alliance by reaping the pleasure of support and adoration from the woman.

The woman (harlot) was also described as sitting upon many waters. (Rev. 17:1) The angel later informs John that the waters are the multitudes of people from every nation and tongue. (Rev. 17:15) This points to worldwide rulership and influence over the masses.

This woman, representing an apostate religious system, is depicted as committing fornication (spiritual idolatry) with the kings of the earth. The inhabitants of the earth (the masses of people) were described as being intoxicated (spiritually blinded) with the wine of the adulterous relations between the great prostitute and the kings of the earth. (Rev. 17:1-2)

The angel also informed John later that the woman...."is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth". (Rev. 17:18) This leads to yet another quesion. Who or what is the great city? Some have proposed Rome, Jerusalem, or Babylon.

So, the woman represents a city who is unfaithful to God; an idolatrous city, who rules worldwide.

Rome ruled worldwide; and the Revived Roman Empire will rule worldwide during the end times. (Daniel 7:7-8, 19-28; Rev. 13:1-2) Babylon also ruled worldwide. Jerusalem has been called "an adulterous city" throughout the Old and New Testaments. Jerusalem has also been called the adulterous wife of God. (Hosea 1:2-8; 2:1-16; 4:1)

The scarlet colored (red) beast that the woman is sitting on sounds similar to the large red dragon, with the seven heads and ten horns of Revelation 12:3-9. This beast was identified as the great dragon, the ancient serpent, Satan, and the Devil.

This beast also sounds similar to the beast with the seven heads and ten horns of Revelation 13:1-9 and Daniel 7:7-8. This beast is the Anti-christ; who was incarnated and empowered by Satan (the dragon). [Rev.13:2]

The dragon (Satan), the beast (Anti-christ), and the false prophet (apostate religious leader) constitute a counterfit trinity (Revelation 13). The woman (harlot) who is sitting upon the red beast symbolizes spiritual defilement/unfaithfulness to God. The role that the woman is playing with the scarlet beast, sounds similar to the role of the false prophet.

    Default Re: REVELATION (Part 2)

    REVELATION 17
    (Continued)

Revelation 17:4-6 The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries.

    (5) This title was written on her forehead:
    MYSTERY
    BABYLON THE GREAT
    THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES
AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH

    (6) I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus. When I saw her I was greatly astonished. [NIV]

The Apostle John is describing the woman's appearance and apparrel. She was dressed in purple and scarlet (red). Purple is the color of royalty; thus signifying she is concubine of kings. Scarlet is a color used to symbolize a prostitute or harlot. The gliterring and flashy gold, precious stones, and pearls reflected the wealth of the harlot's reward. (see Rev. 17:4)

The woman held a golden cup in her hand. Gold signifying wealth, royalty and the priesthood, points to a religious system. The golden cup was full of uncleaness of every type, and the filth of her spiritual infidelities. This woman had a mysterious title written boldly across her forehead. In the times of the Old Testiment Prophets and in the times of the Apostle John, prostitutes wore their names boldly on their foreheads. (see Rev. 17:4-5)

The mysterious title on the woman's forhead: "BABYLON THE GREAT" - Ancient Babylon, located in Mesopotamia was a world ruling empire that controlled all political, financial, and religious systems worldwide. Many view Babylon as being symbolic of the end time world ruling kingdom; that will contend with God and His people. (see Rev. 17:5)

The roots of many, if not all religions identiied in Scripture as being idolatrous, can be traced back to ancient Babylon. The false gods and religions that arose from Babylon impacted all nations including Egypt, ancient Greece, and ancient Rome. Some of the more well known gods included Anu, Ishtar, Bel, Marduk, Ashtaroth, Baal, and the astral dieties such as the sun, moon, and Venus. In Revelation, Babylon is thought to be used symbolically to represent the Revived Roman Empire, the end time kingdom of Anti-christ, and his apostate religious system (the woman).

"THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES" - This title on the head of the woman signified spiritual Babylon, the mother who birthed all forms of religious idolatry and false religions, throughout the nations, and throughout the ages. The fullness of her adultery (spiritual idolatry), would culminate in this woman of Revelation. (see Rev. 17:5)

"AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH" - The ending phrase to the title on the woman's forehead reveals that she is the embodiment of every abomination, uncleaness, and spiritual wickness known throughout the ages on earth. The end time religious system will join in agreement with the dragon (Satan) and the beast (Anti-christ). (see Rev. 17:5)

The woman is described as being drunk, intoxicated to the full with the blood of God's people. John stared at her in absolute amazement, as she swayed in revelry, full of the blood of martyred saints. (see Rev. 17:6) After the third angel had poured out his bowl of judgement, the angel in charge of the waters said God's judgements were just in turning the waters to blood (Rev. 16:4-7)

The angel will explain to John the mystery of the woman and the beast she is riding upon.

    REVELATION 17

Revelation 17:7-8 Then the angel said to me: Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns.

    (8) The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, now is not, and yet will come. [NIV]

The angel speaks to John tenderly, as to one who is beloved. The Apostle John is also known as "The Beloved Apostle", because of his close relationship to Jesus. Angels have addressed highly favored individuals throughout the Scriptures as being beloved, highly favored, mighty warrior, and in other comforting ways.

Abraham was entertaining three visitors. Some hold that the three visitors were two angels and the LORD. [Genesis 18:1-2] As the 'three men' got up to leave, ........the LORD said to them...."Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him." [Genesis 18:16-19]

An angel came to Gideon when he was terrified of the enemies of his people. The angel said....."The LORD is with you mighty warrior." [Judges 6:11-12]

The mighty arch angel Gabriel came to Daniel, as Daniel was in prayer and supplications concerning the sins of God's people. [Daniel 9:20-21] Gabriel gave Daniel the interpretation of the "seventy sevens" (end time prophesy) [Daniel 9:24-27] after telling Daniel that he was highly esteemed of God. [Daniel 9:22-23]

The arch angel Gabriel was sent to the virgin Mary, to tell her she was about to become pregnant with the Christ Child. Gabriel told Mary that she was highly favored and that God was with her. [Luke 1:26-38]

Angels are sent to bring good tidings, to give understanding, to comfort, and to protect those whom God cherishes. God is no respector of persons, and His angels are present and active today.

This angel was sent to comfort John, to give him understanding concerning the woman and the beast. The angel may have also been issuing a mild rebuke to John because of his astonishment of the woman. Jesus often told his disciples "to fear not, nor be afraid". [see Rev. 17:7]:

The angel begins his instructions with the explanation of the beast. The angel told John that the beast with the seven heads and ten horns (Anti-christ), once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. [ see Rev. 17:8]

The angel later informs John that the woman...."is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth". (Rev. 17:18) Some have proposed Rome, Jerusalem, or Babylon. Babylon once was an empire that ruled the nations of the world; Babylon no longer exist as a world ruling empire. Ancient Rome once was an empire that ruled the nations of the world; Rome at this time is not a ruling empire of the nations of the world.

Many Biblical scholars are in agreement that the title "the MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES" represents an evil religious system. The Babylon of Revelation may represent spiritual Babylon, an apostate end time religious system. The fourth kingdom described by Daniel is the Revived Roman Empire, the kingdom of the beast (Anti-christ).

Revelation 18 outlines the horrendous fall of Babylon, the city that is symbolized by the woman, an apostate end time religious system. Revelation 19 shows the great celebration by the heavenly host over the fall of Babylon. Revelation 20 speaks of the events surrounding "the thousand years".

At the beginning of "the thousand years", Satan is to be bound in the Abyss. At the end of this time frame, he must be released for the final deception and battle with God. [Revelation 20:1-9] Following God's defeat of the deceived nations, Satan will be thrown into the Abyss. [Rev.20:10] It is most interesting that the Scripture indicates that Satan will join the beast and the false prophet who had already been thrown into the Abyss. [Rev. 20:10]

The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. John was told by the angel that the inhabitants of the earth, who were not written in the book of life, from the creation of the world, will be astonished about this. [Revelation 17:8]

    REVELATION 17
    (Continued)

Revelation 17:8 The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. The inhabitants of the earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the creation of the world will be astonished when they see the beast, because he once was, now is not, and yet will come. [NIV]

This verse of Scripture was mentioned in the previous post, but will be discussed further. What is meant by "once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction"? For one thing, it reveals the nature and character of Satan. He is known as a deceiver, a liar, and he tries to conterfeit the things that belong to God.

Satan's unholy trinity, consists of the dragon (Satan), the beast (Anti-christ), and the false prophet. This unholy federation imitates The Trinity; Father, Son (Jesus Christ), and Holy Spirit. The Anti-christ and his false prophet, imitate Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit, in regards to the performance of miracles; including Anti-christ being raised back to life from his deadly wound. (Revelation 13:1-4)

The term...."once was, now is not, and will come......" relating to the beast, is yet another attempt to imitate Jesus Christ. In Revelation 1:4-5 John's greeting to the seven churches, which were in the Roman Province of Asia, came "from Him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before His throne; and from Jesus Christ........." "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Amighty. (Revelation 1:8 KJV) If you have a red letter edition of the Bible, you will notice that the text is in black. When Jesus Christ is speaking it is denoted in red print.

Revelation 1:11 however is written in red print......"Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it to the seven churches....." Also Jesus stated to John...... "Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. (Revelation 1:18) Some have interpreted Rev. 1:8 and these later verses to be speaking of Jesus Christ. Others see Rev. 1:8 as speaking of God the Father and verses 11 and 18, as speaking of Jesus Christ. Jesus often told His disciples that He and is Father were one.

Although the unholy trinity attempts to imitate the things of God, if you look closely at the phrases, they reveal the impotence of Satan in comparison to God. Revelation 1:4-5 begins with the very essence of God, "Him which is". God described Himself to Moses as "I AM THAT I AM"......."Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you." (Exodus 3:13-15) In comparison, the beast or Satan who incarnated the beast "once was". A has been, destined ultimately for destruction.

The angel explains to John that..... "the beast you saw was alive but isn't now. And yet he will soon come up out of the bottomless pit and go to eternal destruction." [Rev. 17:8 NLT] We see at the gathering of the kings of the earth and the kingdom of Anti-christ, to do battle with the Kingdom of God; that the beast and the false prophet were captured and thrown into the the lake of fire. [Rev. 19:19-21] Satan, who had incarnated the beast, was seized and thrown into the Abyss for 1,000 years. He would have to be released again for awhile, before going to his final destruction. [see Rev. 20:1-3, 7-10]

It sounds as if the angel is speaking of Satan himself in Revelation 17:8; although some may be of the opinion that the beast that is being spoken of is Anti-christ. Satan himself is described as being released from the Abyss; deceiving the nations in the final battle against God; and later was thrown into the lake of fire with the beast and the false prophet. [see Rev. 20:7-10]

This could explain why...."the people of this world, whose names were not written in the Book of Life from before the world began, will be amazed at the reappearance of this beast who had died." [Rev. 17:8] They will be in awe, deceived, and convinced that this beast can contend with God and win. However, they will all be defeated and go to their destruction.

Thus the authentic revelation of the LORD God Almighty. "....From Him which is, and which was, and which is to come...." [Revelation 1:4] I AM THAT I AM; Jesus the crucified Saviour (which was); who was resurrected from the dead; ascending unto the right hand of the Father; (and which is to come) the Messiah.

    REVELATION 17
    (Continued)

Revelation 17:9-12 And now understand this: The seven heads of the beast represent the seven hills of the city where this woman rules. They also represent seven kings.

    (10) Five kings have already fallen, the sixth now reigns, and the seventh is yet to come, but his reign will be brief.

    (11) The scarlet beast that was alive and then died is the eighth king. He is like the other seven, and he, too, will go to his doom.

    (12) His ten horns are ten kings who have not yet risen to power; they will be appointed to their kingdoms for one brief moment to reign with the beast. [NLT]

The above verses of Scripture have been quoted from the New Living Translation Bible (NLT). This version was utilized to help enhance clarity. Comparison of text can be made with other versions including the KJV and NIV.

The angel is speaking understanding to John in verse 9; he is helping John to comprehend "the mystery of the woman and the beast with seven heads and ten horns." (Rev. 17:7) In both the KJV and NIV, Revelation 17:9 states that it takes a mind of wisdom to understand this mystery.

The Apostle Paul speaks of the wisdom that comes from God. "But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption..." (1 Corr. 1:30 KJV) Paul continued his preaching about wisdom by asking....."For who hath known the mind of the Lord.......But we have the mind of Christ." (1 Corr. 2:16 KJV) The angel is affirming, that John, who belongs to Jesus, will understand this mystery. The wisdom from God is a gift to His people.

The angel told John that the seven heads, are the seven hills of the city where the woman rules. Rome, known as the City on Seven Hills, is considered by many Biblical scholars, as the city being referenced here. In the context of Revelation, it could be referring to the end time kingdom, the Revived Roman Empire. Also seven is a number of completion, and the seven could be seen as seven kingdoms or empires.

The angel indicated that the seven heads also symbolized seven kings. The seven kings representing seven kingdoms, were connected to the attempt to destroy Israel throughout the ages. This was expressed by Satan's attack of the woman, who had given birth to the male child (Messiah). The kingdoms and their attack on Israel are as follows:

    1) Egypt - attempted to assimilate Israel through slavery and destruction of the male seed (Before Daniel)
    2) Assyria- exiled Israel (10 Northern Tribes); also attempted to exile Judah (Before Daniel)

    3) Babylon- destroyed Jerusalem and exiled it's people*
    4) Persia - attempts under Haman's influence to destroy all Jews during the time of Esther*
    5) Greece- Anticus Epiphanes who was responsible for "the abomination of desolation" *
    6) Rome - destroyed Jerusalem*; many Jews were killed and were scattered during time of John

    7) Revived Roman Empire - a future end time kingdom; Anti-christ's kingdom. Ten kings will unify under satanic control, to wage war againt God and his people.

    8) The Beast (Satan) - of the kingdom of Anti-christ, but also distinct, because he has incarnated (is dwelling within) the 7th king (Anti-christ). A final battle will be waged between the forces of Satan and the LORD.

The first two kingdoms were before the time of Daniel. The next four kingdoms (Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome) were prophesied about by Daniel*. [Daniel 7] The angel explained to John that the seven heads of the beast also represented seven kings (see Rev. 17:9).

The angel explained that five of the seven kingdoms had already fallen. This included Egypt, Assyria, ancient Babylon, Persia, and Greece. The sixth kingdom, Rome, was described as reigning now ("one is" KJV). Rome was the ruling world power during John's days. The angel explained that the seventh kingdom (the Revived Roman Empire) is yet to come. This is a future end time kingdom. (see Rev. 17:10)

The angel explained that the scarlet beast that was alive but died, is the eigth king. The scarlet beast (red dragon) is identified as "the ancient serpent called the Devil, or Satan." [Rev. 12:3-9] He is described as "being like the other seven" [NLT] or " is of the seven" [KJV] (see Rev 17:11) He will be like the other seven, in his intent to destroy the seed of the woman who gave birth to the male child (Messiah). He will also be like the other seven, in going to his doom. He is of the seven, or of the seventh king (Anti-christ); yet he is distinct, because he will incarnate the seventh king. [Rev. 13:1-10]

His ten horns are ten future, end time kings. At the mid-point of the Triblation Period, these ten kings will turn over their kingdoms to the beast (Satan). Their reign with the beast will be brief, and their doom assured. (see Rev. 17:12)

    REVELATION 17
    (Continued)

Revelation 17:13-14 They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast. (14) They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings ----and with him will be his called, chosen, and faithful followers. [NIV]

They, the ten kings identified and described in Revelation 17:12, will unite under one purpose with the beast (Satan). They will be so intent on their purpose, that they will be willing to relinquish their power and authority to the beast. (see Rev. 17:12-13)

Securing this oneness of purpose to wage war against the Lamb may involve internal conflict. In Daniel's dream, the fourth beast (kingdom of Anti-christ) had ten horns (kings) on it's head. A little horn (Anti-christ) sprung up amongst the ten horns, and proceeded to subdue three of the ten horns (kings). [Daniel 7:19-25]

They, the ten ruling kings of the earth, will unify their forces with the kingdom of Anti-christ, to wage a satanic attack on the Lamb (Jesus Christ) and His heavenly army. [Revelation 17:14; 19:11-14, 19-21]

The Lamb and His callled, chosen, and faithful followers will overcome and defeat the beast (Anti-christ), the false prophet, and the kings of the earth. [Rev. 19:19-21] For the Lamb is King of kings and Lord of lords. [Rev. 17:14]

    REVELATION 17
    (Continued)

Revelation 17:15-16 Then the angel said to me, "The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and languages. (16) The beast and the ten horns you saw will hate the prostitute. They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her flesh and burn her with fire...." [NIV]

The angel continued his explanation to John. The waters represented the multitudes of people from every tribe and nation; people speaking every language of mankind. The woman is sitting on them; speaks of her world wide domination, through a one world evil, idolatrous religious system. (see Rev. 17:1-2, 15)

This great prostitute (spiritual idolatry) was pictured riding on the scarlet beast, going along for the ride, and enjoying the power and influence of the beast. The beast was agreeable to this alliance, as he benefited from the support and adoration of the harlot. The great prostitute forced all of humanity to worship the beast. She had served her purpose. (see Rev. 17:3-6)

The angel explains to John that the beast and the ten horns (kings/kingdoms) will hate the prostitute. The purpose of the beast, to secure worldwide worship has been accomplished; the prostitute will be viewed as only in the way. The beast and his ten horns, that she rode on, will turn on her.

The angel stated they will hate the prostitute and ruin her. They will totally strip her of all her wealth and glory, leaving her naked. They will devour her and burn her remains with fire. The great prostitute will be totally annihilated by the beast. (see Rev. 17:16)

The beast, who has been incarnated (dwelled in) by Satan, will be revealing his true character and nature. As Satan always destroys his own, after he has used them to destroy others.

Jesus said, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full". [John 10:10 NIV] The thief is Satan; he destroys his own after they accomplish his evil purposes. Who would want to serve or follow him? Apparently many. God allows full choice to mankind as to whom they will serve.

In Joshua's last statements........he said, "but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." [Joshua 24:15]

    REVELATION 17
    (Continued)

Revelation 17:17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled. [KJV]

It is ironic that the very purpose of God will be placed in the hearts of the ten end time kings (horns). God, who is ultimately in control, will cause the ten kings to agree with the purpose of the beast, and to give their kingdom to the beast. The hatred of the prostitute by the beast and the ten horns (kings) will be the catalyst for imposing judgement on the great prostitute.

BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH...... [Rev. 17:5] will be judged, condemned, and destroyed for seducing and subduing the nations throughout the ages with false religions and spiritual idolatry. The kingdom of Anti-christ will be used as an instrument of judgement and destruction of the great prostitute.

The kingdom of Anti-christ will be allowed to control mankind during the Tribulation Period, until the words of God are brought to completion. All of God's word shall be fulfilled.

    REVELATION 17
    (Continued)

Revelation 17:18 The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth. [NIV]

The angel began his instructions with the explanation of the beast. The angel told John that the beast with the seven heads and ten horns (Anti-christ), once was, now is not, and will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction. [ see Rev. 17:8]

The angel concludes his explanation to John that the woman...."is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth". (Rev. 17:18) Some have proposed Rome, Jerusalem, or Babylon. Babylon once was an empire that ruled the nations of the world; Babylon no longer exist as a world ruling empire. Ancient Rome once was an empire that ruled the nations of the world; and the Revived Roman Empire was prophesied to be the future end time kingdom during the Tribulation Period.

The angel said many things concerning "the woman" in his intention to explain her mystery to John. He expained the following:

-The woman is "the great prostitute"; she sits on many waters (people of the earth); and she is destined for punishment. (Rev. 17:1,15)

-The woman committed spiritual adultery with the kings of the earth, and blinded the inhabitants of the earth with her adulteries. (Rev. 17:2)

-The woman sat on the scarlet beast (Satan), enjoying his power and forcing worldwide support and worship of the beast. (Rev 17:3)

-The woman was dressed in royal attire, displaying her great wealth from the rewards of her spiritual idolatry. (Rev. 17:4)

-The woman's title on her forehead "BABYLON THE GREAT" "THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES" "AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH"
-The woman was drunk with the blood of the saints. (Rev.17:5-6)

-The woman was described as sitting on many waters (having authority and control over inhabitants of the earth through false religion); also sitting on the scarlet beast (in agreement with and sharing the power and influence of the beast); also sitting on the seven hills (heads or kings). Thus exerting her extensive influence with the kings of the earth. (Rev.17:1, 3, 9, 15)

-The woman will be hated by the beast and the ten horns (kings) after she has accomplished support for the beast. She will be stripped of her wealth, devoured, and burned with fire. The actions of the beast and the ten horns will accomplish the purpose of God, to judge the woman, and render punishment. (Rev. 17:1, 16-17)

-The woman is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth. (Rev. 17:18) Biblical scholars have speculated that the city could be Babylon, Jerusalem, or Rome. It is also possible that each of the proposed cities could in some way represent "the great city". Babylon represents the roots of all false doctrines and false religions throughout the ages. Jerusalem was often called the adulterous city; and as being the unfaithful wife of God. The Revived Roman Empire has been prophesied by the Prophet Daniel, as the fourth and final end time earthly kingdom.

Revelation 18 outlines the horrendous fall of Babylon, the city that is symbolized by the woman, an apostate end time religious system.
