    REVELATION CHAPTER 12

Revelation 12 Follws the blowing of the seventh trumpet, which signaled the the transferance of power and rulership from the kingdom of this world to the Kingdom of God. Two signs appeared in the heavenly realm.

Revelation 12:1-2 A great and wonderous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. [NIV]

John is describing a great sign that is a part of the greatest conflict throughout the ages, involving spiritual as well as physical realms. The woman represents Israel (as the seed bearer of Messiah). The description of the woman resembles the dream shared by Joseph in Genesis 37:9-10; here the sun and the moon represented Jacob (Israel) and Rachel; and the 12 stars represented the 12 Tribes of Israel.

There are other opinions on the identity of the woman and the 12 stars. Some hold that the woman is the Church and the 12 stars are the Apostles; the woman is Mary and the stars are the Aposles; the woman represents the redeemed and 12 stars are the Aposles and the 12 Tribes of Israel.

The woman is pregnant and she cried out in pain as she is about to give birth. The cry of the woman has been heard through the ages, as a great conflict has raged for the souls of men and the earth.

Revelation 12:3 Then another sign appeared in heaven: an enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his head. [NIV] In Rev. 12:9 we are told that this great dragon and his angels were hurled down to the earth, after a battle with Michael the arch angel and his angels. This dragon was identified as Satan (the devil).

The dragon assumed control of the kingdom of the anti-christ after being cast down to earth, by incarnating the anti-christ. The dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads, is the end-time kingdom of anti-christ. The seven heads are the seven kingdoms of Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome, and the Revived Roman Empire (the kingdom of anti- christ). The ten horns represent the coming kingdom of anti-christ; ten kingdoms that will unite under satanic power (the Revived Roman Empire). This end-time kingdom is described in Daniel 7 and Revelation 17:7-14.

    Revelation 12:4
His tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that he might devour her child the moment it was born. [NIV]

This verse of scripture reveals the very nature and character of Satan. He had rebelled against God in heaven, fought against Michael and lost, and was hurled out of heaven. Here, we see that it was his tail that brought his angels down with him to the earth. We see him poised to devour a newborn baby. Here, the child is the Messiah.

In Revelation 12:9-10 we are told that Satan has lead the whole world astray........and that he is an accuser of the brethren. We are told in John 10:10 that Satan is a thief......coming only to steal, kill, and destroy. He is a mysterious fellow, as he will empower and bless those who belong to him, but after he has finished using them to destroy others, he will ultimately destroy his own.

In John 10:10 Jesus reveals the purpose of his coming......"I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."
In John 10:11 Jesus stated, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."

Yet, the world was angry with God.

    REVELATION 12
    (Continued)

Revelation 12:1-2 A great and wonderous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about to give birth. [NIV]

The process through the ages of the woman (Israel as seed bearer) going through the pain of giving birth to the male child (Jesus Christ the Messiah), had it's root in the first sin, that was committed by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. The serpent (Satan) deceived Eve into eating the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge. Eve influenced Adam into eating the fruit also. Eve was deceived but Adam had committed high treason against God.

In Genesis 3:15-16 The LORD God said to the serpent....."From now on, you and the woman will be enemies, and your offspring and her offspring will be enemies. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." Then He said to the woman, "You will bear children with intense pain and suffering...." This was the first prophesy concerning God's redemption plan for mankind.

The labor pains of the woman (Israel) manifested as Satan attempted throughout the ages to interfere with God's plan of redemption for mankind (the birth of the Messiah).

    Labor Pain
Cain kills Abel - Satan's attempt to blot out rigtheous seed but God intervenes with birth of Seth [Genesis 4, 5]

Fallen Angels Mingle Seed With Mankind- Satan's attempt to corrupt mankind but God intervenes by destroying mankind and all living creatures except righteous Noah, his family, and the creatures he brought into the Ark of safety. [Genesis 6,7,8, 9, 10]

All of Mankind United By One Language - Satan's attempt to corrupt mankind through one world government but God scatterred man across the earth and confused their languages. He also called Abraham to leave his family and the culture of idolatry and death. Abraham was called to be the "Father of Many Nations" (Gen. 12:1-3). [Genesis 11, 12]

Abraham & Sarah (Barren) - Satan causes Sarah to doubt God & offer Hagar as a substitute for providing seed, thus creating a rival to God's promised seed. But the LORD assures the birth of Isaac through Sarah; and later Hagar and Ishmael are sent away. [Genesis 15,16, 17, 18, 21, 22]

Dinah's Rape By Shecem - Satan's attempt to corrupt the seed of Israel through assimilation; prevent Messiah's birth. After Jacob's sons killed the men of Shecem, Jacob was in danger of destruction by surrounding nations. But God allowed Jacob and his family to leave and protected them from the surrounding people [Genesis 34, 35:1-5]

Joseph Sold into Egyptian Slavery By His Brothers - Satan planted animosity and jealousy in the brothers of Joseph, because he was Jacob's favorite son. Satan attempted to destroy the seed of Israel during a period of crushing famine. But God elevated Joseph from a slave to second in power in Egypt, positioning him to preserve the seed of Israel. [Genesis 37-----50]

Pharoah Ordered Destruction of All Male Hebrew Children in Egypt - Satan attempted to assimilate Israel into Egypt, but God called Moses and raised him up to deliver Israel out of Egyptian bondage. God sent plagues upon Egypt to demonstrate His power and that He alone is God. [Exodus 1---12]

Haman Ordered Destruction of All Jews In Persia - Satan attempted to destroy the Jews and prevent the birth of Messiah, but God brings Esther to the Persian Kingdom as Queen to intercede for Israel and to destroy their enemies. [Esther 1---10]

Herod Ordered Destruction of All Male Children Under the Age of Two - Satan attempted to destroy the Messiah (Jesus) as a child. But God warned Joseph in a dream to flee with the child and his mother to Egypt. [Matthew 2]

Crucifixion of Jesus - Satan made direct attempt to destroy the Messiah. Jesus was killed on a cross, and remained in a tomb for 3 days. But God raised Him from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus ascended into heaven, sitting at the right hand of the Father. This was the first coming of Jesus Christ as Messiah, occurring at Daniel's 69th week. [Matthew 27, 28]

World Wide Religion (Islam) a rival to God's Covenant With Israel - A system created to transfer land promised to Israel; to build a rival temple; to prevent existence of Israel as a nation. But God promised that Israel to become a nation. [Ezek. 36---39]

Hitler Ordered the Destruction of All Jews - Satan moved Hitler and his followers to attempt to eliminate all Jews from the face of the earth through the Holocaust. Satan was attempting to prevent the Word of God from being fulfilled by eliminating all Jews. But God delivered the Jews after the world conquered Hitler. Israel went on to be victorious against it's foes and to create the Jewish State of Israel. [Ezeliel 36, 37]

The Dragon (Satan) will make a final attempt to destroy the seed of the woman (Israel), in an effort to prevent the second coming of the Messiah. This will occur during the second half of the Tribulation Period. But God will make a place of refuge for the remnant of Israel to escape and Messiah will have the final victory over the kingdom of Satan and his Anti-christ. [Rev. 12---20]

The spiritual and physical birth pains endured by the woman (Israel) throughout the ages makes natural birth pain seem like a mild headache. The scriptures tell us that all of creation is groaning, as it awaits redemption.

    REVELATION 12
    (Continued)

Revelation 12:3-4 In these passages of scripture that were reviewed in post # 11 another sign appeared in heaven. An enormous red dragon with seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns on his heads. This red dragon represented the kingdom of Anti-christ. "The great dragon (the ancient serpent called the Devil, or Satan)" was hurled down from heaven....... [Rev. 12:9] John made it clear that the dragon of Rev. 3-4 was the same person as the dragon of Rev.12:9.

Satan incarnated (took possession of) the Anti-christ and his kingdom during the second half of the tribulation. Satan has a long history of locating and using vessels to do his evil deeds. He incarnated the snake in the Garden of Eden, who deceived Eve and caused the fall of mankind. He incarnated Anti-christ and took control of his kingdom (the red dragon), a vessel used to terrorize the world in the end times.

Satan is/has been known through the ages by different names, but he is the same person.

    Serpent (snake) - subtle, shrewd, deceptive [Gen. 3:1, 2, 14 ; 2 Cor. 11:3 ; Rev. 20:2]

Devil (Diablos) - slanderous, accuser, maligner [Gen. 3:1-6 (of God to man) ; Job 1:6-11, Jude 9 (of man to God)]

Satan (adversary) - malignant enemy [I Peter 5:8]

    Dragon (serpent, sea monster) - [Isaiah 27:1 ; Rev. 12:3, 4, 7, 9]

Lucifer (light bearing) appearing as an angel of light; son of the morning, morning star [Isaiah 14:12-17 ; Ezekiel 28:13-18]

In John 10:10 the character and purpose of Satan is clearly described........."The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy." The purpose of Jesus..." is to give life in all it's fulness." [NIV]

    (Continued)

Revelation 12:5 She gave birth to a son, a male child, who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter. And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. [NIV]

The woman (Israel, the seed bearer) gave birth to a male child (Jesus), who will (Jesus was under subjection to his parents, Joseph and Mary, until he became of age and in his ministry/kingdom), rule all the nations with an iron scepter. Isaiah prophesied concerning the coming kingdom of the Messiah. "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end........." [Isaiah 9:6-7 KJV]

Her child was snatched up to the throne of God; this is speaking of the ascension of Jesus Christ. [Mark 16:19, Luke 24:50-52, and Acts 1:9-11] Although the dragon stood directly in front of the woman (Israel) to devour her child (Jesus, the Messiah); even bruising him on the cross with death........but God raised him from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit, and he ascended into heaven, sitting at the right hand of the Father in heaven. [Acts 2:32-33]

Revelation 12:6 The woman fled into the desert to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1260 days. [NIV]

The woman (Israel) will need to flee; protection will be provided by the LORD, God Almighty. A place of refuge will be prepared to meet all the needs of the surviving remnant of Israel. The prophet Zechariah indicated that 1/3 of Israel would be a remnant in the land [Zechariah 13:8-9] This time frame is the second half of the Tribulation Period, the last 3.5 years (1260 days).

    REVELATION 12
    (Continued)

Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. [NIV]

Michael is a powerful archangel; he is a defender of Israel during the Tribulation Period. Michael and Satan have been enemies for ages; both held positions of power in heaven. Satan was a cherub who covered God's throne; he held a very priviledged position in God's presence. Until iniquity was found in him. Michael, the archangel was in charge of the angelic host in heaven.

Satan and 1/3 of the angelic host had originally fallen after rebelling against God in heaven. Although Satan had fallen from his position as covering cherub, he had access to the throne of God through the ages. This access was clearly shown in Job 1:6-12 where Satan boldly came into God's presence with the angels of God. He revealed himself as the accuser of the brethren and obtained permission from God to afflict Job.

The battle occurring in heaven in Revelation 12 between Michael and Satan occurs in the end times. Michael and his angels are allowed to fight with Satan and his angels and cast them from heaven.

    Revelation 12:8
But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. [NIV]

We are told that Satan fought back, but he was not strong enough to withstand the power of Michael the archangel. The access to God's throne was cut off, because Satan and his angels lost their place in heaven. Satan was no longer able to accuse man at the throne of God.

Revelation 12:9 The great dragon was hurled down---that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him. [NIV]

Satan's sphere of control will become extremely limited when he can no longer access the throne of God. His fury will be unleashed against the inhabitants of earth. He will be further infuriated when he is not able to devour the male child, and the woman flees to her place of refuge. Matthew describes a time of trouble to come on the face of the earth in the end time. [Matthew 24:15-20]

    REVELATION 12
    (Continued)

    Revelation 12:10
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before God day and night. [KJV]

Heaven rejoiced as a loud voice proclaimed the victory for the kingdom of God over Satan, after he was cast out of heaven. Satan will no longer have access to the throne of God, to accuse those who belong to God. Satan has been accusing mankind since the fall of Adam and Eve. He will continue to accuse mankind before God, until the second half of the Tribulation Period. Just as Satan is the accuser of the brethren, Jesus is our advocate.

The Apostle John writes, "My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if you do sin, there is someone to plead for you before the Father. He is Jesus Christ....." [I John 2:1 NLT]

"And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous......." [KJV]

Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto death. [KJV]

The brethren (those who belong to God) will overcome or defeat Satan because of the blood of the Lamb (through the completed work accomplished by Jesus Christ on the cross). Satan's defeat will also be accomplished as the brethren proclaim the Good News. The brethren will further defeat Satan by choosing to die to the things of this world, and to live in the world to come.

John speaks of being a companion in the tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ. [Rev. 1:9]

John speaks of the coming "Great Tribulation" that will occur in the last 3.5 years (1260 days) of the end of the age. He speaks of the coming kingdom of Anti-christ, after Satan is cast out of heaven to earth, and incarnates (posesses) Anti-christ. He will give Anti-christ power to wage war against the saints of God, and overcome them. Some will be thrown in prison, some will be killed as pre-destined. Here is the patience and faith of the saints (opportunity to have endurance and faith). [Rev. 13:1-10]

Revelation 12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. [KJV]

There will be great rejoicing in the heavens over the realization of salvation, power, the kingdom of God, and the authority of Jesus Christ. At the same time there will be great trials on earth because of Satan's wrath. He will be extremely limited, no access to God's throne, and he is also aware that his time is short. In his fury, he will lash out at the inhabitants of earth.

Satan is aware of his fate at the return of Jesus Christ. Satan will be seized, bound, and thrown into the bottomless pit for 1,000 years. After a brief release from prison, and a final battle against Israel, he will be thrown into the lake of fire.........joining the beast and the false prophet. They will be tormented day and night forever. [Rev. 20:1-3, 7-10]
